IMO it really starts to be a problem when they neglect developing their own original cast/world in favor of just dropping in characters/settings from previous games--or expies of them. It makes the game feel really uneven 😩

Honestly as a local FF4 stan I felt similarly about FF4's treatment, though I thought the Zeromus and Four Fiends arrangements were both pretty fun. Ngl I'm more in the camp of "why do they keep diluting their own canon with permanent crossover content" 😭

Ultimately, ideally, the game would improve. That's why my doc wraps up w/changes that could endear me to it once again. It's in a really bad spot right now, and I hope it does change for the better and regain more of a playerbase.

im not sure i would call it being a hater. i obviously care a lot about FF and I spent a lot of time in FFXIV and I like game dev. People who are attached to XIV to the point of finding critique upsetting may want to dismiss me as a hater, but truly I think it's very sad that FF has become this.

one of the meanest tricks FFXIV has pulled is convincing its playerbase that being able to level every class on 1 character is a GOOD thing, and not in fact an excuse for them to make leveling alts into a soul sucking trial that either costs you hundreds of hours or $50 + the current expac playtime

It makes me very sad to see people still absolutely going to bat for FFXIV (and SQEX in general) when they have so clearly proven that they value money over EVERYTHING. Plus Yoshi-P is so creatively bankrupt that he's floating adding auto-travel to FFXIV. A freemium MMO/gacha staple in a paid MMO.

Yes, it does come off a bit as "leave the corporation alone" since I was more expressing irritation that FFXIV continues to be "Yoshi-P and his buddies do whatever strikes their fancy" even as it bleeds subs and those that ARE still subbed plead for indications that the devs hear them.

Like just to be pedantically specific, I've seen a galling number of critics (CRITICS!) call SHf's writing "good" and praise its story, despite the fact that it breaks Writing 101's "Show, Don't Tell" rule, where every character just outright states their feelings and motivations, lol.

True! One of my all time faves does just that (999!) and I love it. I appreciate that games are a media that appeal to people who might not have the time/energy for reading novels, but I do feel like it's easy to tell when someone who doesn't read outside of games says a game's writing is "good."

i think it's a little surprising that people are Actually Upset about someone saying that games writing is subpar compared to literature, because it's true, and it's not even remotely insulting. Video games aren't made to be literature, they're made to be interactive experiences.

to do that, and worse, the state of social media has enabled a climate where people tie their morality to the type of media they consume. Tropes as a substitute for discussion are for sure annoying, but in the way a check engine light is annoying. (IMO ofc)

i think it's more a broader lack of education that's done that. The over reliance on tropes in dialogues about literature is a symptom, not the disease. We live in an era where people are allergic to media criticism and deeper examinings of their own biases bc they aren't armed w/ the knowledge

Being "developed as a product" is more relevant a statement than ever w/regards to modern AAA. Not less relevant, not equally relevant, more. Considering the state of game dev + economy I don't see the issue in saying "hey there are quality AAAs from the past to play, here are a couple I like."

Defamation in US law is very specific & very hard to prove against celebrities/public figures. Like in order for it to be defamation it has to be presented as fact, with malice, by the would-be defamer and *also* provably false, and ALSO must have actually impacted the plaintiff’s reputation.
