- with the only evidence left that you shared a life with someone being an electric fan staring back at you. and choosing to use that fan to tell the world just how much pain and anger you felt in the moment. but the people who chose to do exactly that - its what makes them artists.

so it makes me insane when someone looks at something like Electric Fan and is like "i could do that", because its like you literally couldn't though. you'll never walk into your apartment and find it completely stripped down to the bones -

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electri... Electric Fan is one of the many pieces of art that came out of the AIDS epidemic. a lot of them ("Untitled" (Portrait of Ross in L.A.) and "Unfinished Painting" are other famous ones) are artists trying to encapsulate their grief when they didn't have the words.

one of my favourite art pieces is Electric Fan, and the amount of people i've tentatively shown it to and seen them immediately roll their eyes and go "i could do that". you didn't. and you never will. because you didn't have something to say, and you didn't want to share it with the world.

and to no one's surprise these are probably the same people who use ai tools to make ai images, and why its not art. there's nothing being said. they've actively chosen to forego effort and the chance to say something, just to show off something they believe is "high fidelity", ergo "superior"

this is how you get a bunch of people strolling into art galleries like "i could do that/that's not special", because they're misunderstanding the reality of art being just another form of conversation. they're refusing to engage with what is being said, and obsessing over the technicality of it

this is really fucking odd advice because art, fundamentally, is a conversation. all forms of art are an artist just saying "this is how i feel/i thought this was worth saying", and sometimes asking "is this how you feel too?". it is, a lot of the time, how we communicate with the world.

especially in an era of corporate and artificial slop, its more important than ever to remember art is a conversation, not a high-fidelity end product. your art is an extension of the ideas and imagination you have as a person. why would you not be your own biggest fan?

you have to be your own biggest fan. you can be aware of flaws in your work and areas you can improve, but you have to love what you're creating more than a hypothetical audience ever could. you need to be able to look back at your work and say "i put in the work and made that, because i love it".

there are still a lot of other variables in place that make it difficult for me to engage in art as hobby (living situation etc), but i have a medication review soon so i will ask my doctor about it. but before i do i was wondering if anyone has encountered anything similar with antidepressants/etc🤔
