Brian Chiglinsky @chiglinsky.bsky.social · 13/01/2025That last one would be fun because in 2012’s NFIB v Sebelius case, John Roberts was BIG MAD about the feds suddenly cutting Medicaid funding to states My cynicism of the Court knows no bottom now, but it’d be interesting to see how far this argument could go. 100 0
Brian Chiglinsky @chiglinsky.bsky.social · 13/01/2025What can Virginia lawmakers do? Not much. If Congressional Rs want to gut Medicaid, they basically can. But VA can slow the process down, explore using its budget surplus and state-run Marketplace, and (my favorite and mostly for fun) sue the jerks 100 0
Brian Chiglinsky @chiglinsky.bsky.social · 13/01/2025Not only would it be terrible for those patients, but it would likely drive a number of rural hospitals in the state into financial ruin and closure. Even fully insured people would lose access to doctors and hospitals they need. 100 0
Brian Chiglinsky @chiglinsky.bsky.social · 13/01/2025The problem is that: Republicans in Congress have said they’re taking direct aim at this funding AND Virginia’s law requires kicking *everyone* who got coverage under Medicaid expansion off their coverage *immediately* if the feds pay less That’s around 700,000 people. 100 0
Brian Chiglinsky @chiglinsky.bsky.social · 13/01/2025But because of political and budget concerns, a few states expanded Medicaid under the *specific condition* that this formula never change. Virginia was one of those. (h/t to @kffhealthnews.bsky.social’s Phil Galewitz) 100 0
Brian Chiglinsky @chiglinsky.bsky.social · 13/01/2025It starts with how expansion is funded. Right now, the feds pay 90% of the costs for everyone who gets coverage under the expansion. Pretty great deal! 100 0
