It (nearly) lives! Forthcoming from OUP in November or December! My first reaction, for once, was glee — though the terror of writing a book is that it’s never finished. Eek! Woohoo! Wild to have proofs in hand!!!!
Title page of forthcoming book by me, titled Nineteenth-Century Poetry and Cosmologies of the Human: Worlds Unmanned. From Oxford UP.Table of contents for forthcoming book.

Introduction: Poetry, Person, Planet — with subsections on William Wordsworth; Sylvia Wynter and lyricization; climate, affectability, impress; and criticism, canonicity, and counterbumanism.

First chapter on Wordsworth, Charles Lyell, and c19 manscapes — with subsections on Wordsworth’s and Lyell’s lyric theologies, the pathetic fallacy (Ruskin) and Wynter on desperate realization, and apostrophizing Toussaint Louverture.

Second chapter on Tennyson’s In Memoriam, the possibilities and limits of posthumanism, and ambivalent reading — with subsections on extinction and apostrophe.

Third chapter on Elizabeth Barrett Browning, the problem of reference, and infrastructures of reading — with subsections on Swedenborgianism, sphericity, plantation inheritances, and the slippages of rhyme.

Fourth chapter on Phillis Wheatley, extractivism, extractionist reading, and salvage criticism—with subsections on solar intergumanism, allusion, reticence, and refusal.

Coda on contemporary representations of climate collapse, Wynter on transumption, and the afterlives of c19 aesthetic imaginaries.

As a footnote will add that, not-dissimilarly, James Ferguson describes the psychic rifts that result when ideas of development + growth propagated by a liberal-bourgeois tradition confront the boom & bust realities of extractive economies—& he tells it not from the Musk (owners') POV but from below

You might be thinking of beginning of Moretti's *The Way of the World*?
Quote from Moretti, *The Way of the World*: "The Bildungsroman as the 'symbolic form' of modernity: for Cassirer, and Panofsky, through such a form 'a particular spiritual content [here, a specific image of modernity] is connected to a specific material sign [here, youth] and intimately identified with it. 'A specific image of modernity': the image conveyed precisely by the 'youthful' attributes of mobility and inner restlessness.
Modernity as a bewitching and risky process full of 'great expectations' and 'lost illusions'. Modernity as - in Marx's words - a 'permanent revolution' that perceives the experience piled up in tradition as a useless dead-weight, and therefore can no longer feel represented by maturity, and still less by old age" (5).

This is great! Reminds me of this section from his “Reification and Utopia in Mass Culture” (1979, pg 140)
“Yet the relationship between class struggle and cultural production is not an immediate one; you do not reinvent an access onto political art and authentic cultural production by studding your individual artistic discourse with class and political signals. Rather, class struggle, and the slow and intermittent development of genuine class consciousness, are themselves the process whereby a new and organic group constitutes itself, whereby the collective breaks through the reified atomization (Sartre calls it the seriality of capitalist social life. At that point, to say that the group exists and that it generates its own specific cultural life and expression, are one and the same. This is, if you like, the third term missing from my initial picture of the fate of the aesthetic and the cultural under capitalism; yet no useful purpose is served by speculation on the forms such a third and authentic type of cultural language might take in situations which do not yet exist. As for the artists, for them too "the owl of Minerva takes its flight at dusk," for them too, as with Lenin in April, the test of historical inevitability is always after the fact, and they cannot be told any more than the rest of us what is historically possible until after it has been tried.”

I have a Keywords essay on "Exhaustion" coming out with CLCWeb. My book, Probable Exhaustion, offers a literary account of exhaustion as specter of progress discourse in terms of physiological labor, finite resources, and British cycle of accumulation (forthcoming from Cornell UP, 2027)
