Bosses will regularly commit wage theft and unfair labor practices and rely on you just not knowing your rights. The amount they skim off the top more or less covers any legal costs they incur. For example, a lot of salaried employees actually ARE entitled to overtime in a lot of states.

Here's a cool thing about the GCIWW: there's a sub-minimum dues level of $6 a month for members under economic hardship. No means test, it's all on the honor system. You get exactly the same benefits as other dues levels, too!

Any good policies or protections implemented by elected officials can just as easily be overturned or circumvented when those policies and protections become inconvenient to capital. The only way to create lasting change is to dismantle capitalism, and until we do everything serves capital.

Did you know that being unionized at your place of work also gives you rights you don't have otherwise? For instance, you have the right to union representation during interviews and meetings that could result in discipline or termination of your employment. These are called Weingarten rights.

In 1919, a group men who served in World War I formed the American Legion. In the preamble to its Constitution, the group dedicated itself to maintaining law and order, “to make right the master of might” — a motto that reverberated for a century until a version of it landed on the Active Club’s shirts at Pride. Members swore “to foster and perpetuate a 100-percent Americanism.” At its first national convention, the Legion passed a resolution to “organize immediately for the purpose of meeting the insidious propaganda of Bolshevism, IWWism, radicalism, and all other anti-Americanism.”

Have you talked to your coworkers about organizing? If you haven't yet, you should. It is, of course, legal to discuss organizing in your workplace while you're working, but people are much more willing to talk about organizing away from the prying eyes of the boss.
