We're huge fans of @chicagocovenants.bsky.social and following the research that Hannah Simmons, PhD student at Northwestern, is doing as a Black Metropolis Graduate Assistant. Her latest-- the 1951 race riots in Cicero. We can't help but note parallels today www.chicagocovenants.com/research/cov...

Very impressed with the work of @chicagocovenants.bsky.social Been there as a volunteer (not enough, unfortunately) and finding restrictive covenants is both depressing and satisfying in the way that unearthing history and bringing it to light is satisfying www.chicagocovenants.com

this is a weirdly enjoyable activity for 60-90 minutes I’ve done a bunch of times: you’re in the Cook County building basement looking for race restrictions in property sales ledgers and logging ones you find so a student researcher can look up their details on microfilm later

85 Years Ago Today: The US Supreme Court struck down a racially restrictive covenant in Chicago's Woodlawn neighborhood, opening this South Side area to Black homeownership but falling short of challenging the constitutionality of such covenants. Read more about Truman Gibson, a lawyer involved:

I talked to the Chicago Covenants Project about the significance of their work to me as a Black Chicagoan and researcher, why Chatham fascinates me as a building nerd, and the importance of celebrating the unsung architecture & neighborhoods of this city
