A few times a year, my phone forcibly reminds me that I have a hard limit of 500 tabs available to me.

He’s an unsurpassed genius! But somehow not clever enough to figure out a way to be simultaneously good at his job and a borderline-decent human being!

(I completely understand why people are excited! There’s just no such thing as unexpected Paul Gross in Canadian media. There’s always a small part of you waiting for him to pop up.)

Me, a Canadian, immersed in the Canadian media landscape: it’s a Canadian show, chances were good he was going to turn up eventually.

I did the thing that was scaring me!
Photo taken of a river valley from a seated position on a paddle board. The water nearly turquoise. It is summer and the trees are green. There is a single boat sharing the river and it is a decent distance ahead.

I have not been paddle boarding since I broke my hand last year, and tbh I’m finding it harder than expected to work up the nerve.

He was about a month from retirement and I was exhausted from the end of MSc/start of my PhD, so I decided against a formal complaint. He wasn’t going to be seeing many more patients. Sometimes I still wonder if I made the wrong choice.

It was. So out of nowhere.

I literally just stared at him, open mouthed, while my brain slowly processed what he’d said. And then processed it again, because there was NO WAY.

I once had a blood pressure specialist tell me “there were no fat people in concentration camps.” Boy howdy did I not see him again.

Slaw, but I don’t really like potatoes. When I was a kid who lived at home, it was mashed potatoes. Canadian!

My prawn suit falling through the floor to dangle, ass out, from the ceiling of the room below is going make it slightly more difficult for me to get out of the monster-filled lava maze 1300 metres below sea level... #subnautica
Photo of a still from the video game Subnautica. A mech suit has called through the floor, and mostly through to the room below. When looked at from said lower room, it is dangling, ass out, from the ceiling.

I love this for you! The worst restaurant experience I’ve had in my life was (highly recommended!) Mexican food in Paris.

Things I like in a video game: exploring, world building, distinct biomes & eco zones with actual thought put into biogeology Things I don’t like: horror Current Subnautica experience: Nope-ing out of exploration every time I see the faint glow of some motherfucker teleporting in the distant gloom

I just yelped “they can fucking teleport???” at my tv. Playing #subnautica unspoiled is a very normal experience.

A while ago, I had a meeting with a prof. When I left, his lab manager asked me if I was there to talk to him about doing my MSc. She seemed very confused about how chuffed I was at the question. Until I explained to her that I was already a postdoc.

It’s so interesting to me that it’s Diamond and Morton’s there, because I don’t think I’ve seen either! Here you’re usually looking at a no-name store brand or Windsor. I’d have no clue how to calibrate to the common US brands.

Okay, but WHY do I have to price my own art if I want to attempt to sell it. It’s much, much harder than the actual making of said art.

There was one point when I was standing outside. In the 20 degree sunshine. In January. With The Sound of Silence running through my head.

About two weeks ago, it hit 20c. Which is 68F. In January. In ALBERTA. It’s more pleasant than -30c/-22f. But what the actual fuck.

I use mine more for things like roasting veggies or making things crispy or crunchy! Of course, I got mine in part because my place gets nigh unliveabley hot during parts of the summer, and the idea of turning on the stove or oven becomes impossible.

Thank you! And yeah, the first time I kept stepping and frowning and muttering “what.” I’m still a little confused! I’m obviously a stronger painter with my dominant hand, but - this could definitely be going worse???

Cherry @cherryice.bsky.social · 06/12/2025
My dominant hand continues to be a literal pain, so I decided to try painting with my left. The first time was mostly for shits and giggles. But now it is - going surprisingly well?
Rough impressionistic acrylic landscape. Two small islands with conifers in a very blue lake, with a treed hill and mountain range behind them. Rough impressionistic acrylic landscape. A stand of evergreens and conifers is reflected in a barely-there lake. Behind them are foothills and a mountain range. Rough impressionistic acrylic landscape. Two mountain ranges converge around a lake, and there are dramatic clouds in the sky.

… wait, can most people not tell when something is using alternative sweeteners
100
Cherry @cherryice.bsky.social · 23/11/2025
The majority of people I know who dislike stevia have similar taste reactions to it - somewhere between sucking on a penny and weird vegetative off-ness - as opposed to the people who just find it intensely sweet!
120
Cherry @cherryice.bsky.social · 23/11/2025
I suspect we will find out there’s a gene variant involved in stevia taste perception, similar to with cilantro. (I might have to keep an eye out for if it’s involved in migraine triggers, hmm)
220
Cherry @cherryice.bsky.social · 23/11/2025
Stevia tastes like drinking bog water out of an aluminum can. Makes everything it’s in inedible. And because it’s technically a natural sweetener, they don’t even WARN you about it, unlike “artificial” sweeteners.

Artists! Quote with your yellow art!
A textured abstract painting sitting on an easel. The background is a textured mix of yellow, brown, and Payne’s grey. The foreground details including intersecting and overlapping lines in white, red, grey, blue, and yellow (a mix of solid and broken lines), raised sandy areas in fluorescent yellow and orange, and a circular vortex.

Maybe a potato crust for a quiche? Aloo paratha? Samosas? There’s a huge range of Thai and Indian curries you can put them in, and they usually freeze really well!

Cherry @cherryice.bsky.social · 31/10/2025
If they’re waxy potatoes, I love pan fried shredded hashbrowns! Grate with a box grater, use your hands to squeeze out as much liquid as possible, and throw into a very hot pan with oil or butter. Season as desired. I’ll often do onions and or peppers at the same time, and an egg makes a meal.
