I did the thing that was scaring me!
Photo taken of a river valley from a seated position on a paddle board. The water nearly turquoise. It is summer and the trees are green. There is a single boat sharing the river and it is a decent distance ahead.

My prawn suit falling through the floor to dangle, ass out, from the ceiling of the room below is going make it slightly more difficult for me to get out of the monster-filled lava maze 1300 metres below sea level... #subnautica
Photo of a still from the video game Subnautica. A mech suit has called through the floor, and mostly through to the room below. When looked at from said lower room, it is dangling, ass out, from the ceiling.

My dominant hand continues to be a literal pain, so I decided to try painting with my left. The first time was mostly for shits and giggles. But now it is - going surprisingly well?
Rough impressionistic acrylic landscape. Two small islands with conifers in a very blue lake, with a treed hill and mountain range behind them. Rough impressionistic acrylic landscape. A stand of evergreens and conifers is reflected in a barely-there lake. Behind them are foothills and a mountain range. Rough impressionistic acrylic landscape. Two mountain ranges converge around a lake, and there are dramatic clouds in the sky.

Artists! Quote with your yellow art!
A textured abstract painting sitting on an easel. The background is a textured mix of yellow, brown, and Payne’s grey. The foreground details including intersecting and overlapping lines in white, red, grey, blue, and yellow (a mix of solid and broken lines), raised sandy areas in fluorescent yellow and orange, and a circular vortex.

Fun fact, you’re less likely to break your metacarpals if you are (checks Cleveland Clinic’s notes) under 10, or a woman between 40 and 50.
Overview
Anyone can break a metacarpal bone.
Some groups of people are more likely to experience a metacarpal fracture than others, including:
• People ages 10 to 40.
• Men.
• Women older than 50.

Final update! Sorry not sorry for the spam.
Fully open inflorescence of a hoya krimson queen. The flowers are waxy-looking. Both the petals and corona are shaped like five-pointed stars. The petals are pink and semi-transparent. The corona are white with a maroon centre. The flowers look almost like a sculpture.

The stars emerge!!
Same as above, except the waxy flowers are continuing to open, revealing a central star.

It’s happening! My Hoya Krimson Queen is blooming for the first time! Smells like tootsie rolls!
Close up of the umbel of a hoya krimson queen. The closed flowers look like 3D pink Mario stars. They are opening to reveal the inside of the flower, which is pink and maroon. They are thick and waxy-looking.

My Hoya krohniana continues to bloom heavily, the only downside of which is that it constantly poops all over the floor. My Hoya Krimson Queen and Hoya sigillatis are both trying to flower for their first time!
Flowers of a Hoya krohniana. The photo is of a single umbel of blossoms. The individual flowers are tiny and fuzzy. The outer petals are circular and light pink. The central corona is star shaped and cream, almost like there’s a tiny starfish in the middle of each flower. Individual flowers that the plant has pooped into a wood-style laminate floor. The flowers are tiny, dried out, and look crunchy to step on by accident. (They are.)The unopened peduncle of a Krimson Queen hoya. The peduncle is pink and downward facing. The sepals are visible, and darker maroon. A tiny peduncle starting to form on a runner of a Hoya sigillatis. In the background, you can see a more-developed peduncle (though still in its early stages) on a Krimson Queen.

Apparently these grabby assholes LOVE trellis jail.
A Hoya sigillatis growing on a round trellis. There are grasping runners sticking out the top. It is definitely more dense than the previous photo. A watermelon dischidia growing on a round trellis. It is significantly better filled in that the previous image. There are even tiny flowers preset

Note to self: when doing in-town things like interpretive walks at the bird sanctuary it is not a bad idea to check to make sure you removed the bear spray from your hiking bag before repurposing it
A stream in early spring. The deciduous trees are bare and grass is brown, but the sky is blue and the water is extremely turquoise. A large dead tree lies partway across the stream, bare branches reaching out of the water.

Photos, because the last image (the one that was obviously one of my first plein air paintings) took me close to as long to paint as the other two. A lot of it is practice! Some of it is “how long can I actually sit with my paints on a gravel island I paddle boarded out to?”

Colouring mixing swatching doesn’t have to be the full panel finicky shit I showed earlier. I’m too tired for that now. You can learn a ton from the bigger colour pools that run together in varying ratios! Or picking any three colours and seeing how they work together.
Mixing triads in watercolour, brighter and more classical. Mixing triads in watercolour, deeper and moodier.

Here I was playing around to see how burnt umber (granulating) played with other colours I use frequently. The granulation is more obvious with the cobalt teal and manganese blue, almost colour-separating mixed. I expected the cobalt teal (it’s all granulating) but not the manganese hue!

The same pigment from different companies can have very different characteristics, depending on chemical handling, how fine the pigments are, the binder used, etc. Here I was trying to figure out which turquoise to use as the cool blue in my pallet.

Look at this baby (this now-giant baby) I think I’m going to have to get rid of because I grew it too big and bushy and be-leaved from a small cutting

Ironically, I have at least one plant that’s going to have to go out because I grew it from a small cutting too well. It’s too bushy and has too many leaves and nooks and crannies for me to even dream of treating it in effectively. 😭😭😭

Plants who refuse to stop being grabby assholes get sent to trellis jail.
A Hoya sigillatis (a vining plant with green leaves splashed with silver) wrapped on a round trellis. Several grabby tendrils stick out at odd angles. A watermelon dischidia (a vining plant with round green leaves, marked with white pale stripes like a watermelon rind) wrapped on a round trellis. Many grabby tendrils stick out at odd angles.

Well, that’s not an ideal configuration for vision correction.
A pair of broken glasses, snapped at the bridge, held in one hand. The frames are clear purple. They were clearly excellent glasses that deserved to come to a better end.

Does anyone have any idea what kind of melon this is? It showed up in my ugly produce box, so it’s potentially slightly off-model. It’s about 8”. (I know that the colour of the flesh would help, but I don’t want to cut into it until it’s ripe, and knowing what kind of melon it is would help that.)
A melon of unknown type sitting on a counter. It is oblong and ovaloid in shape, very pale yellow in colour. The rind is slightly textured but that appears to be from the flesh underneath, not a function of the rind. The rind is smooth and unwebbed.

I didn’t write any words this year (it’s a thing, I’m having feelings about it), but here are four of my favourite paintings I made in the last year
Acrylic landscape painting, somewhat impressionistic. The Rocky Mountains tower over a small swimming hole in the summertime. There are paddle boarders and people in a rowboat on the water. Line and wash watercolour landscape of a forebay in the Rocky Mountains. The ink work is heavy and the colours are applied with a light hand. The sky and water are free of colour. The photo is taken outside. The painting is in a sketchbook, which is held in front of the scene that has been painted. Pet portrait of a grey parrot. His head is cocked inquisitively to the side, one yellow eye visible, and he is perched on a branch. Abstract acrylic painting with three dimensional elements resembling crumpled ice sheets and sharp sand dunes. It is mostly done in cool yellows, blues, and browns. There are broken line elements in navy, red, white, and pale yellow. Smaller areas of fluorescent yellow and orange are scattered in.

Today, in things that shouldn’t irk me as much as they do: The fact that I have 12 out of 14 of the Oz novels in the same edition, and the remaining two in dramatically different formats.
A single shelf of a book shelf, centred around older copies of the 14 Wizard of Oz novels by L. Frank Baum. Twelve are tall, white copies with black and red spines. #1 is very tall, narrow, and dark-spined. #6 is a green mass-market paperback.

My most kudosed fic on AO3 is So we all are growing young (Adventure Time, Bubbleine.) This is it, the fic that throws off my statistics distribution. It was written early in the show’s run, and a surprising amount of the lore and speculation held up.
Screencap of “so we all are growing young” by cherryice on the ao3. It is an Adventure Time fic, Marceline/Princess Bubblegum. The summary is “Marceline may be a thousand years old, but Princess Bubblegum has been eighteen for a very long time.”

Quote with your current read! Here’s mine #booksky 💙📚 Binti By Nnedi Okorafor Just starting it, but I’ve really enjoyed everything of Okorafor’s that I’ve read in the past.
Cover of Nnedi Okorafor’s Binti. The face of a black woman is superimposed over a field of stars. She is using her hands to transfer streaks of what look like orange ochre to her face and hair. The cover also carries a banner reading “HUGO AND NEBULA AWARD-WINNER!” and a quote from Ursula K. Le Guin. “There’s more vivid imagination in a page of Nnedi Okorafor’s work than in whole volumes of fantasy epics.”

Made a thing!
Abstract painting. A square wooden panel is broke up into segments by intersecting straight and curved lines. The segments are filled with either solid colours or patterns. It is done in brown, maroon, royal purple, orange, teal, and white.
