What’s astounding about all of this is Democrats have been asleep at the wheel for decades and in this recent merger acted decisively to aid its completion, even after they were on the path to blocking it. This is why some people think there isn’t much difference between the two parties.

This is so distressing, especially as local media also keeps taking hits. There simply aren't enough local reporters to cover everything with the care and depth that are deserved. Journalism is one of the important backstops of democracy, both local and national, and it needs to be valued as such.
