Do maintenance and processing compete for a shared resource in working memory? In our new preprint, we use three experiments to show that they are more independent than commonly assumed. The observed trade-off arose mainly when processing required additional information to be encoded:

How to best estimate Bayes factors for standard hypothesis tests? We compared bridge sampling and the Savage-Dickey density ratio. The latter does a good job in most constellations typical for experiments in cognitive psychology.

Reliability, bias, and computational cost of estimating the Bayes factor using bridge sampling and the Savage–Dickey density ratio - Behavior Research Methods
Bayes factors often require numerical estimation because closed-form solutions are unavailable. In six simulation studies, we explored the reliability, bias, and computational cost of two easy-to-use ...

Tired of relying on accuracy & RT to study individual differences? Cognitive models go beyond task performance to estimate the cognitive processes driving behavior. We bring cognitive models to individual-differences research — with practical guidance on study design and data analysis.

Can We Process Information Without Encoding It into Working Memory? Our findings with @gidon-frischkorn.bsky.social and @koberauer.bsky.social suggest that processing entails encoding. Task-irrelevant information enters working memory during processing, impairing memory for relevant information.
