An abstracted landscape inspired by hikes in the Columbia River Gorge

The gorge is moody, misty, windy, tempestuous. Landslides, rock fall, blowdown, fire. Tall cliffs and deep chasms. Waterfalls and boulders. It inspired an entire series of paintings some time back, and continues its influence in much if my abstract work today.

And it is one of the most magical, mysterious and challenging places to hike.😁

Already we have factory farmed, free range and organic chicken. Cost to the consumer might be a side issue over nutritional aspects, but the ethics of animal husbandry becomes a side issue. Far more complex than single trade deal issues.

Not much point having power if you use it to further the agenda of your opponents… The Brexit mindset is a dull-witted and dangerous dead end. Beyond time to make the case for a more grown up, prosperous and cooperative relationship with our European neighbours. (Letter, Times)

Sir, As one of Jake Richards's Rother Valley constituents, I was pleased to see his Thunderer ("Brexit voters can see the need for deals with the EU", May 7). I welcome his focus on the need to rebuild relationships with the EU, especially in the light of global financial and political turmoil, and I accept that rejoining the EU is off the agenda.
However, even though he is an impressive, active local MP, I fear he underestimates the enthusiasm of his constituents (and others in similar constituencies, many of whom did not vote Labour in the local elections) for reworking our relationship with the EU.
Labour should emphasise historic and future connections to Europe rather than allowing the populist right to dictate what matters, but this will need bold, confident, collective promotion as well as clear explanation of the party's policies.
