Who Governs? JP Morgan threatened to quit UK over mooted tax rise for banks. CEO met Reeves/Starmer, tax didn't rise. Govt cut benefits, dept budgets; real tax rises for others. Corporations dodge taxes, bully govts and govern. Curbing their power is essential for any form of democracy.

Whilst the MSM love a 'good' misleading headline and enough spin to keep their readers ,'wokeless', we need threads like this to give weight to the counter balance. Thank you Emma.

This Morning the World is Made of Wind acrylic on birch panel 9 x 12 sold This morning the world is made of wind, nearly everything creaking or flying, even the shingles vainly lifting as if the house… were drawing wind into its gills. - Ted Kooser. #art #painting #landscapeart Story-ALTtext⬇️

An abstracted landscape inspired by hikes in the Columbia River Gorge

The gorge is moody, misty, windy, tempestuous. Landslides, rock fall, blowdown, fire. Tall cliffs and deep chasms. Waterfalls and boulders. It inspired an entire series of paintings some time back, and continues its influence in much if my abstract work today.

And it is one of the most magical, mysterious and challenging places to hike.😁

Already we have factory farmed, free range and organic chicken. Cost to the consumer might be a side issue over nutritional aspects, but the ethics of animal husbandry becomes a side issue. Far more complex than single trade deal issues.

Not much point having power if you use it to further the agenda of your opponents… The Brexit mindset is a dull-witted and dangerous dead end. Beyond time to make the case for a more grown up, prosperous and cooperative relationship with our European neighbours. (Letter, Times)

Sir, As one of Jake Richards's Rother Valley constituents, I was pleased to see his Thunderer ("Brexit voters can see the need for deals with the EU", May 7). I welcome his focus on the need to rebuild relationships with the EU, especially in the light of global financial and political turmoil, and I accept that rejoining the EU is off the agenda.
However, even though he is an impressive, active local MP, I fear he underestimates the enthusiasm of his constituents (and others in similar constituencies, many of whom did not vote Labour in the local elections) for reworking our relationship with the EU.
Labour should emphasise historic and future connections to Europe rather than allowing the populist right to dictate what matters, but this will need bold, confident, collective promotion as well as clear explanation of the party's policies.

Marvellous Minoan basket-shaped vessel decorated with double-axe motif. Though it’s 3,500 years old it looks like a modern tote bag! From a pottery hoard found during 3 days trial excavations on the island of Pseira, Crete, in 1906. Heraklion Archaeological Museum 📷 me #FindsFriday #Archaeology

My photo shows a Minoan basket-shaped yellow-coloured, pottery vessel, decorated with black bands depicting double-axes. The vessel is 19.8cm in height with straight sides and two carry handles. It is described as looking “like a modern shopping bag because its base is circular, but the top is compressed together as if it were made of soft material and the handles were pulled together to carry it” in the 2007 book ‘INTRODUCTION TO THE AEGEAN ART’ by Philip Betancourt.

Double-axes were a popular symbol on Minoan religious objects. A hole in the base shows it was designed for use as a rhyton, a type of vessel for pouring offerings, probably during religious ceremonies. Dated Neopalatial period, 1500-1450 BC.

It was found in 1906 by Richard B. Seager in a hoard of fine pottery stored in Building BQ at the base of the so-called ‘Grand Staircase’ during three days trial excavations on the island of Pseira, off the coast of Crete.
