To me members of a political party are the party and they are it's greatest resource. A sea of experience, ideas, skills and passion. So I find it depressing to see so many people championing ways to reduce or minimise membership involvement in decision making, in response to losing a vote.

My convictions are probably very similar to yours, except with a bit more consideration.

Craig Horrocks @chcookley.bsky.social · 14h
True, but that was not the state being called for

Craig Horrocks @chcookley.bsky.social · 14h
I didn't say I was concerned, I implied it was controversial
100
Craig Horrocks @chcookley.bsky.social · 14h
Not my call, but to suggest that to say so is anything other than controversial is disingenuous
200
Craig Horrocks @chcookley.bsky.social · 14h
Yes it did. Zionism is, on the whole, racist - although the title says it is racism. However, it is the rest of the text that is controversial

Craig Horrocks @chcookley.bsky.social · 14h
With that series of non-sequiturs, I'm not surprised that even your attempts at insults are way off the mark.

Craig Horrocks @chcookley.bsky.social · 14h
I don't know what is possible. Nor does anyone else as far as I can see. I also live in the UK, the decisions do not belong to me.

Craig Horrocks @chcookley.bsky.social · 14h
It does that explicitly!

Craig Horrocks @chcookley.bsky.social · 14h
The motion calls for a single state across the whole of Palestine. What does that mean for Israel? If more clarity needed, the handbook that explained the motion is explicit.

How odd! What prompted that piece of wit?

Calling for a country's eradication is always going to bring a little debate!

I wasn't really describing how left wing the party is - but rather the ground up grassroots democracy and consensus politics that Labour abandoned a long time ago, in favour of centralised control and overt factionalism.

New working paper: the Norwegian wealth tax was a huge success. The "exodus" of wealthy people never happened (less than 100 individuals left). Tax revenue increased by 71.5%. No changes in business activity or investment. www.nber.org/papers/w35854
Taxing Entrepreneurial Wealth: Evidence from
Norway, 2021-2025
Marius A. K. Ring
WORKING PAPER 35854|
DOl 10.3386/w35854
ISSUE DATE October 2026
Whether imposing higher taxes on business owners adversely affects business activity by constraining investment and inducing capitalist flight is a central question in the ongoing debate on how to tax the ultra wealthy. To shed new light, I exploit a series of related Norwegian reforms during 2021-2024 that increased dividend tax rates, removed migration-related capital gains tax loopholes, and nearly doubled the effective marginal tax rate on business wealth. These reforms spurred international debate and, allegedly, an "exodus" of Norwegian billionaires (Financial Times,
2023). While I document clear effects on migration, these responses are concentrated among the top 0.1% of the wealth distribution and mostly confined to 2022 and 2023. My results indicate that at most 100 individuals left due to the reforms. I find no evidence of significant outmigration or reduced inflows of startup founders or inventors. I estimate that absent any outmigration, wealth tax revenues would have increased by 75% from 2021 to 2024. Reform-driven outmigration lowers the revenue gain to 71.5%. My findings further show that outmigrating owners' firms remain economically active and do not reduce investment. In a broader set of analyses, I examine whether business outcomes are affected, regardless of whether owners outmigrate, since firms may reduce investment both due to liquidity constraints or distortions to owners' savings decisions. I compare firms owned by Norwegian individuals subject to the wealth tax with firms owned by foreigners and other tax-exempt entities. By merging historical ownership data from Orbis with the Norwegian shareholder register, I perform these analyses on both Norwegian and foreign-domiciled firms.
Across settings, I find no evidence that Norwegian-owned firms pay out more dividends or invest less after the reforms,…

Did that consultation change anything of the motion? As far as I can see, nothing changed between the draft submitted to the Spring agenda forum and that which was debated last week - except some sanitisation by SOC

There was another motion written, but which could not be debated because it was at odds with ZiR that had already passed

We are currently generating 100% of our electricity demand from net-zero sources, with a further 10% being exported (plus 10% more from legacy gas). At a cost of just £8.27/MWh. Yet the Tories and Refuk want to take us backwards to more fossil fuel pollution and higher prices... grid.iamkate.com

The 'old guard' is not a hive mind. There are lots of divergent views. One thing that is concerning, though, is that we have a lot of new members who were previously in Labour whose comfort zone is to attempt to turn the Greens into a left wing version of the Labour Party
200
Craig Horrocks @chcookley.bsky.social · 23h
Why on earth should that be a binary decision? The EU is currently far stronger in challenging those bigotries than we are in the UK.

I'm not convinced that this is the case in GPEW. There are many socialist Greens who opposed the motion and some of the actions of the proposers
190
Craig Horrocks @chcookley.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
That was already the case and good progress was being made in bringing both the country and the government towards acknowledgement of the genocide and some sympathy to putting pressure on Israel. I fear the Green Party has just let the government off the hook. However, we shall see....

Craig Horrocks @chcookley.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
So, how do we get one?
100
Craig Horrocks @chcookley.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
That is a very reasonable position. However, when a one state solution is proposed, the proposers, as is the case in the Green motion, often exclude Israel-born Jews from the conversation about how that state should be constructed. Equality needs to include everyone.

Andy Burnham has said he wants to reverse Thatcher’s 40 year legacy of privatisation. Now is the time for him to seize the moment, anchored by a set of principles that are uncompromising enough to make a difference to people's lives. Our new report sets out how to do it. vist.ly/5mh3j
"“If water companies cannot invest without raising our bills, they should be allowed to go bust and then taken into public ownership. The public has had enough of the rising bills, service cuts, hosepipe bans and sewage dumping. It is time for water to be taken into public ownership like 90% of the world.”

So what is the first step proposed? I opposed it as much for its lack of practical application as for its complete deviation from Green Party values of grassroots democracy, peace-first approaches and anti-imperialism. There is nothing to get behind!

Spain, Italy are already moving, we've seen smaller moves from other countries. BDS campaign is growing slowly. EU condemning West Bank settlements. Protests are happening in Israel. Beyond that, I don't know. What's your alternative?

Craig Horrocks @chcookley.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
Without that coalition, nothing is going to change. We need to keep moving governments, organisations and others towards increasing pressure on Israel. That can only happen if there is a clear set of steps and we don't alienate some of those, like them or not, who may play key parts in those steps

Craig Horrocks @chcookley.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
Those relatives of those murdered and tortured want the murdering and torturing to stop. That means building a large coalition against Israeli brutality. Them and Us sloganeering is not going to achieve that
200
Craig Horrocks @chcookley.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
That is incredibly over-simplistic. Those who oppose the genocidal Israeli state have a lot of different perspectives on how that state's brutality can be stopped.

I think many underestimated how much a good proportion on members are fundamentally opposed to the principles on which the motion was founded - not the electoral impact, nor even accusations of antisemiticism, but the contradiction with peace-first, grassroots democracy and consensus policy making

I agree, wholeheartedly. It maybe be closing the gate after the horse has bolted, but raising the profile of party democracy needs to be a big focus. It may be worthwhile that local parties consider creating a 'democracy officer' to do just that

Craig Horrocks @chcookley.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
Many members talk with pride about how democratic our party is, but far too few get involved in any part of that democratic process. In-person Conference attendance can be too expensive and time-consuming for many, but online participation is available for the vast majority of members

At the moment, I can't see a clear route to any sort of decent solution. However, if and when the opportunity does arrive, the people in the region need to own it or it won't sustain.

What about the rest of the motion?
000
Craig Horrocks @chcookley.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
They should support the solution that works to bring peace and democracy. What that looks like is for those that live there to decide, not western meddlers. So while I opposed the motion, I also proposed removing a commitment to 2 states,

Craig Horrocks @chcookley.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
It is not for us to decide!
110
Craig Horrocks @chcookley.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
But what is that approach?
100
Craig Horrocks @chcookley.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
That's not the case. I can't now, as a councillor, support a two-state solution if that is what Palestinians want. I don't think that is the best option, but can understand that many Palestinians may not want to share a country with much wealthier former Israelis who have been abusing them for years
110
Craig Horrocks @chcookley.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
That's not what the Palestinians doing the surveys say and they are very clear on their methodology and their limitations. This is a case of dismissing reality because it is inconvenient to an argument. Which is not something I've noticed you doing before
000
Craig Horrocks @chcookley.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Palestinians have a range of different views, we shouldn't be making decisions based on who we happen to know

Thank you. I was just looking for the same
010
Craig Horrocks @chcookley.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Absolute fiction. The surveys that have been done, by well regarded Palestinian organisations, have also included many findings that are just as threatening to Israel as a one state solution. What we in the Greens have said, though, is that we are choosing a minority position, because we know best!
