#abortion #fetalrights #law #Canada My kid and I were discussing this Supreme Court of Canada case from 1999, which denied a child the right to sue its mother for prenatal injuries. Worthwhile reading for the rejection of “fetal protection”, but also a weird case because it meant no insurance. 1/

Once more: narrow exceptions for the life of the mother don’t actually work. In medicine, the point is that you don’t want things to get so bad that someone’s life is at immediate risk, because you might not be able to save them at that point.

More people need to embrace "I don't know enough to speak about this topic properly and I don't have the time to learn enough about it to do so" when it's the truth.

Nobody chooses where they are born or who their parents are. Countries like Canada and the US have laws against discrimination on the basis of national origin for a reason. Don't like what a foreign government is doing? Fine. You still can't discriminate against people here, who came from there. 1/

Logging off until after the holidays, so Shana Tova in advance. In addition to hosting 60 people over 2 nights, my FIL took a turn for the worse and I got a “help, my dad fell and mom can’t lift him” call from husband today, so I dealt with that. Also have urgent work stuff due today.

Being a Canadian Jew in Bluesky these days is fun, because I get to read about how our family in Israel deserved to be attacked even though they protested Netanyahu and then I read about how Canadians are wrong to hurt innocent Americans by boycotting booze and cancelling trips.

Having some feelings today as I dropped off my son for law school orientation, 35 years after my own at the same school. Like should this be a “Mom, what were you like in the 90s” IG reel? He gave me a big hug and thanks, but honestly it was his hard work and he’s so much more prepared than I was.

Exactly. China was also engaged in the self-sabotage of the Cultural Revolution, India was going through the Emergency, Vietnam and Bangladesh went through wars instead of being garment industry hubs. The rest of the world has developed since the 1970s.

Entirely predictable outcome of Texas law. It doesn’t protect babies or prevent abortions. It does empower abusers to use the legal system against victims and anyone helping them.

I totally understand ceasing contact with someone who is hurting you or your loved ones. But I wonder about how useful it is to say that access is “earned”? What if you are doing this to influence folks, but they don’t miss you and now don’t have to listen to you or have their bubble disrupted?

I know Threads is mostly ragebait, but I’m seeing parenting posts like ”maybe kids could have more independence in the 90s but things are more dangerous now.” No, they’re not. Dangerous crime rates peaked in the early 90s and then fell. This isn’t opinion, we have objective crime stats.

I’m always puzzled by the folks pushing absolutist positions who are determined to demonize and refuse engage with practical realities. Read about S.M.A.R.T. goals. Read Getting to Yes. Ask yourself why feeling absolutely righteous is more important than a strategy that achieves something better.

Apparently, one popular author is being vilified because she called an action by her own fictional character “stupid”, and another is being vilified for mentioning that a character attended a concert by an Israeli pianist, who simply played the piano.

This is a state investigating what is clearly a miscarriage. 13-15 weeks, no trauma, not born alive. Groups are more obsessed with the possibility that someone could have taken abortion pills than with the reality that spontaneous miscarriages happen, usually in toilets. 1/

When I had my 2nd miscarriage, I flushed. I was sad about the loss, but there wasn’t anything “sad” about flushing. I knew it wasn’t viable. Miscarriage is common, it generally happens on the toilet. Be sad for the actual woman experiencing a loss and some pain, care more about her than your ick.

This is weird. I wondered why someone that I’ve “known” online from when I had a different screen name blocked me, and judging from the timeline it might be that he took offense to a post on….not expecting Canada to magically invade and rescue Americans??

When my kids were growing up, we’d be at services Sat morning, where kids without screens ran around together. When Girl2 was 3 yo, she’d make her own playdates and then inform me of her plans. Kids are in their 20s now but say some of those Saturday skills were useful. Ditto screen-free camps.

For starters, we could make sure that members of the regime and their families don’t get to reside here or stash their assets around the world. We could also focus on tech solutions to stop them from being able to cut off communication from their citizens during a massacre. bsky.app/profile/yash...

This is a sort of compound bigotry: mentioning background, saying some real things he did, but then framing it as something bad. I don’t like focusing on Frey being Jewish, but it’s actually a point of pride that he wanted to protect everyone in his city regardless of where they came from.

I think people’s actions reflect their character. Sometimes, voting or other political advocacy is part of those actions. Too often here, though, mere identification of loyalty is seen as virtuous without actually doing anything, or despite doing other things.

Question for anyone familiar with spiraling: Some of mine relates to stuff that was legitimately a problem, that I initially glossed over and put on a smile. Is there a point where it’s ok to revisit stuff and feel all the feels, or do you always needs to distract yourself and snap out of it?
