📖Published📖 Patterson et al. evaluate the potential for integrated species distribution models to predict species distributions at remote, understudied locations, focusing on scenarios where no species observations are available at the projection site 🐾 🌍 🧪 buff.ly/TOVl3L1
(a) A visual representation of spatial model transfer, where a model is fitted to occurrence records at a training site and predicted to a projection site where there are few or no records. (b, c) Representations of two key challenges often associated with model transfer: Environmental dissimilarity of the training and projection sites and unaccounted for spatial autocorrelation of the species distribution that can operate across different autocorrelation ranges and levels of variance.

🚨 Excited to share our new research! 🚨 We tackle a big question in conservation: how can we make smarter use of existing surveys to learn about places and species we haven’t yet been able to survey? 🏔️ 🔗 Read the paper here: doi.org/10.1111/2041...

A bleached and damaged coral reef. Text overlay says: Ecosystems are being pushed towards collapse. Rising temperatures, changes in rainfall and more frequent extreme weather events are forcing species to adapt to the new conditions, migrate to new locations or die out.A dry riverbed. Text overlay says: The declining health of Country threatens traditional practices and knowledge systems. Climate change is putting at risk Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ ability to connect with and care for Country.A salmon fishing catchment in the ocean. Text overlay says: Loss of nature will impact primary industries and the economy. Declining ecosystems will impact the delivery of ecosystem services important to agriculture and fisheries, like the presence of pollinators or nursery habitats like seagrass and mangrove forests.

Giving rivers room to move: how rethinking flood management can benefit people and nature. Happy to see this @aunz.theconversation.com piece out.

Giving rivers room to move: how rethinking flood management can benefit people and nature
Restraining rivers through stop banks and channels transfers and heightens flood risks downstream. Allowing them to roam free limits flooding and delivers other ecological benefits.

Stoked to have a cover photo for @ecography.bsky.social! In our paper doi.org/10.1111/ecog... we included temporal dynamics into SSFs, resulting in daily patterns of movement and habitat selection. Simulating gave us dynamic spatial predictions across the landscape. Code! github.com/swforrest/dy...
