I wish I could go back in time and tell my kid self that one day he will be a small part of that cartoon about the funny anime cats he loves so much 🥹

Last night my 5yo daughter watched Dragon Ball's first ever beam battle (Goku vs Jackie Chun), and as their kamehamehas exploded against each other she ran to my lap worried about what might happen. Kiddo, just you wait. (Early low-stakes Dragon Ball is my favorite Dragon Ball, though.)

This was a pretty good anime season. New highlights for me were: - Jaadugar: A Witch in Mongolia - Draw This, Then Die - Smoking Behind the Supermarket With You All very different shows whose episodes I looked forward to for different reasons.

I just read my kids the Freedom chapter of Wayside School is Failing Down--the one where Myron is given the choice to either be Free or to be Safe. That chapter stuck with me as a kid. When I later created a pantheon for my D&D setting, it heavily influenced the strongest of my evil deities.

This guy is incredibly cool in general, and I feel like this video sets a great example for how to shut down assholes without falling into defensive patterns that might cause harm to other people. I don't click on videos but I'll make an exception for him and his wife and I've never regretted it.

I was taking a bus trip back in 2003, and one of the other passengers was staring at me. Eventually they asked, "hey, you're not going to blow up the bus, right?" Post-9/11 was an uncomfortable time to be ambiguously brown.

My kids were playing Made You Look. "Look at that!" The other looks. "Haha, you fell for it!" They weren't tricking each other. Not really. They were taking turns. Still, I told them that it wasn't a good game. You want people to trust what you're saying! Don't laugh at people for believing you!

FF5 a downgrade from FF4 in several ways imo but, man, the unique battle sprites for every job for each character is so cool. I like seeing how each character's style and personality is reflected in each class. I don't recall many other games doing that again until Octopath Traveler.

I recently finished the original Final Fantasy for the first time. I appreciated how very influenced by D&D it is. Kinda. As a DM, though, it hurt to go through the later part of the game tearing through legendary D&D monsters like paper. My darlings posed no threat to me at all.

Laura has been spending a bunch of time creating stained glass imagery of my homebrew D&D pantheon. Imagine creating something and then someone else likes it enough to make at about it. It's the most gratifying thing.

Or alternately, you make up someone that everyone falls in love with. Sometimes that was supposed to be the villain, and now you need a new villain because you can't bring yourself to make the party kill their new husband/waifu.

I think about this a lot. It can be hard to remember sometimes but once you’re in the habit it becomes automatic. You could spend your whole life complaining about little things other people do but it’s way more fun to compliment people

Sideways Stories from Wayside School and its sequels. It was the first book I remember feeling compelled to read aloud to others in the hopes that they enjoyed it as much as I did. They did not, but I appreciate them for listening nonetheless.

So, I beat Harvestella, and I'm trying to wrap my mind around it. I have no idea why this game has a farming sim in it. The farm has no thematic or story relevance. It's just an unrelated thing you do to unwind between missions. And in the middle of missions. While lives are on the line.

I don't typically compare myself to others, but it occured to me that I'm probably the most successful person in my graduating class, as far as my own standards go. Like, I don't think anybody else in that class would be impressed, but I think I'd impress my own 18yo self. I feel good about that.

For the past few years we've been marking the kids' growth on this wall. This is also where the previous family who lived here tracked their kids' growth, and their marks are still on the wall. What do I tell my kids when they notice and ask about the unfamiliar names?

A wall marking the steadily growing heights of children. Some are marked in black marker and are fairly recent. Some are in faded pencil and are from 2018.

I think my favorite small but important feature of Fields of Mistria is when you talk to a group of people all at once. Seeing characters interact with each other and converse among themselves makes them feel more alive, yet it feels like a rare thing to see in this type of game.

This feels fairly accurate. That low Determination score was concerning, but in reading how it's defined in this instance it feels right. I'm a steamroller, but I'm a flexible steamroller. Justice also felt low, but I am pretty slow to judge others harshly. Too often a devil's advocate.

Looking forward to learning that alternating exclamation points and periods is a sign of AI, or that using synonyms to avoid repetition is a sign of AI. Or that listing two things followed by "etc" because you couldn't think of a third thing but you know there must be one is a sign of AI.

I know it can feel like this, but there really are tangible ways to join and influence the party itself. Become a Precinct Committeeperson. Get some friends to join you. Go to the meetings. Speak up and vote there. Join the state committee. It's time consuming and tedious, but it's how you show up.

I'm sure some might call me a railroading DM, but I like to think of myself more as a shepherd (or perhaps a catherd) DM: yes, there's a direction we need everyone to go, but getting everyone to go there is more about giving clear goals to work toward and letting the party head there on their own.

Had a dream last night in which I was exploring a closed animation studio. In the bathroom all the toilets had drafting tables and drawing pads, presumably so the artists would also have to draw while using the restroom.

June 4: Kakunodate Samurai Village In the morning I revived myself in Yuze’s baths. I’ve learned not to be shy about public baths, but it’s always a bit more relaxing when I’ve got the whole bath to myself. These baths were particularly nice: for one thing, they didn’t smell like sulfur!

Screenshot of Google Maps showing the route from our hotel in Yuze, down along the Tama River, through Kakunodate Village, and on to Tendo, where we stopped for the night.

Photo of a plate with several small dishes on it including sausages, eggs, stew, salad, chicken nuggets, and a croissant.

The breakfast buffet at Yuze Hotel was pretty nice, with a wide variety of foods. Again, I appreciate how the plates acknowledge the nature of buffets by giving you a bunch of small portion sizes so you can try a litle of everything. Did I need to try their chicken nuggets? No, but I COULD, so I did. They were fine.

I don't really care where ya'll land on the Daylight Saving Time vs Standard Time debate, but I've spent the past 14 years in Standard Time, so I can say it's pretty great. One of Arizona's top 10 features. When does the sun rise and set? Doesn't matter. You get used to the reality you live in.

June 3: Lake Towada and the Tomb of Jesus Christ We awoke to find ourselves still smelling a bit sulfurous. The smell would chase us through the day, whispering into our noses a little less with each passing hour. Luckily, we spent a lot of time in the fresh air.

Could be, but I still like getting familiar with road names and numbers. Some people naturally absorb those things, and GPS doesn't diminish that much. And some people will never absorb map info, simply being eternally lost before GPS.

Japan Trip 2026 - June 2: The Mixed Bath The ferry has limited food offerings–just snack machine and Cup Noodle, basically–so we popped into our best option for a quick breakfast that was open at the time we needed it to be: McDonalds. It’s exactly what you expect it to be.

Screenshot of Google Maps showing our route for the dady. The vast majority of the journey was the ferry from Hakodate to Aomori.

Photograph of the Hakodate skyline, which isn't much of a skyline since the buildings are not very tall. Far in the distance, along the horizon, you can just barely make out the ocean and the northernmost tip of Honshu, where Oma is.
