This drives me crazy: Japanese media has a self-supporting ecosystem of comics, animation, movies, and games that all directly feed sales into each other in a perfect machine. They lean heavily into transmedia. Why is manga so popular? Wacker: "Must be because they print their books smaller."

It may be on creators to finance those long runs themselves (on a place like KS) before bringing them to the direct market. Then, with many books done, in the pipeline, the series (not needing funds to get it off the ground) may survive long enough to build the fanbase it needs to continue on.

Hollywood is in a worse place than the comic industry right now. I think a lot of publishers just aren't sure what's coming in six months. What's the economy going to be like? Will anyone still have money? It's a "time to be cautious/ invest in the ip/ talent you know works" approach.

Despite record sales across the industry the state of the creator-owned market seems dire right now. Multiple publishers are scaling back their line, a few don't seem to know what they want, others have pretty much shifted focused to entirely licensed books. It's weird!
