A common dolphin (Delphinus delphis) and a spinner dolphin (Stenella longirostris) are getting ready to show all the appreciation for their smallest cousin during #SaveTheVaquita week. For more info and the stream schedule, check vaquita.mx What are they using for make-up? Squid ink, maybe?
A drawing of a common dolphin and a spinner dolphin. The common dolphin is holding a make-up brush while the spinner dolphin says "You're making it look like I have two black eyes," referring to the dark patch around their eye. The common dolphin replies "That's just what Vaquita looks like and we're all getting dressed up for their celebration."

Calling all artists, streamers, and citizens of the internet! #SavetheVaquita Week is Oct 11-17th, and you can help! With fewer than 20 left, these little porpoises are almost gone and hardly anyone knows about them. Let's change that by flooding the web with vaquita content! Share and read on! +
Save the Vaquita Week October 11-17th 2026
With fewer than 20 estimated remaining, the vaquita is the most endangered marine
mammal on the planet. Found only in Mexico's Gulf of California, this little porpoise
is a relative of whales & dolphins and is the smallest of the cetaceans.

Vaquita are accidentally caught in illegal gillnets set for the totoaba fish, and they
sadly drown as bycatch. Fishermen seek out the totoaba for it's swim bladder
which is valued at many thousands of dollars in illegal markets.

Without intervention, the vaquita will soon be gone.

But you can help!

For one week, the goal is to flood the internet
with vaquita content. Use #SaveTheVaquita to
share art, videos, streams, and more on any
platform. If we all do a little, it adds up to a lot!

There are over 20,000 specimens in the Academy's vertebrate paleontology collection, 450+ of which are type specimens — the first dinosaurs described from the United States, the dire wolf holotype, ichthyosaurs potentially collected by Mary Anning herself(!), and much, much more....
Ten of the very first dinosaur teeth from America (four tyrannosaur teeth, one hadrosaur tooth, and an assortment of random Ornithischia), pictured atop Joseph Leidy's original 1856 description naming Palaeoscincus, Trachodon, Troodon, and Deinodon)The holotype left maxilla of the dire wolf, collected from Indiana and described by Joseph LeidyThe skeleton of Ichthyosaurus somersetensis, which arrived at the Academy in the 1840s (possibly a specimen collected by Mary Anning - the paper trail is inconclusive) and finally recognized as a unique species in 2017The cervical vertebrae of the long-necked Elasmosaurus, which was originally and infamously described back-to-front with its head on the end of its tail by Edward Drinker Cope, a blunder that arguably helped kickstart the Bone Wars. A placard is propped up on the bones depicting the old and new interpretation of the skeleton, with the helpful caption "Everyone makes mistakes."

Here's a piece of Paleozoic fossil coral for this week's #FossilFriday ...found in the Early Cretaceous Cedar Mountain Formation How's that possible? It's been 'reworked' — having already been fossilized ~300 million years ago, it had eroded out, tumbled smooth, and been reburied in the Cretaceous

Part of an article in Florida Trend: "Other AI projects are in progress at the Florida Museum. One tries to quantify levels of coloration within a specimen to learn more about prey-predator dynamics. Another leverages generative AI to help fill gaps in incomplete fossil records, reconstructing fragmented artifacts within a level of certainty.
