By condemning violence and trying to safe-guard Californians’ right to protest, he is striking a balance that could resonate with Americans beyond the Golden State, and perhaps help unite a Democratic Party that seems fractured and aimless

Amusing but these stories are mutually exclusive. Reporting one doesn't mean the other is neglected. We can argue about the urgency of the reporting on Trump but the media is reporting on him. The Biden story is a single story, Trump is a dozen a day. "Flood the zone" is working.

I have a BA in Engineering Technology. Nearly went Mechanical until I saw that ET was a hands on degree and ME was all theory. We ran an engineering team building an ultra fuel efficient engine. The ME students would come to us to learn how things actually got fabricated and built.

Trump is so used to using mean tweets to get his way in the US that he thinks it would work outside the US. Remember, he literally said that he controls the world. This is the FO part of Trump's FOFA shit with Putin.

I'm not sure where the threat is. CA is a donor state, sending tens of billions of dollars more to the Washington than it gets back. If CA stopped sending taxe dollars Washington, it would be lights out for some red states.

THey want colleges to be trade schools, not places where people might actually learn about the world, much less places where research and innovation that drive the American economy happen.

The Trump administration is engaging on an all-out assault on the institutions, workers and standards that make learning and knowledge production possible, in the hopes of securing political dominance forever. (Gift link) www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv...
These various initiatives and policy changes are often regarded as discrete problems, but they comprise a unified assault. The Trump administration has launched a comprehensive attack on knowledge itself, a war against culture, history, and science. If this assault is successful, it will undermine Americans’ ability to comprehend the world around us. Like the inquisitors of old, who persecuted Galileo for daring to notice that the sun did not, in fact, revolve around the Earth, they believe that truth-seeking imperils their hold on power.

"This administration's position is that there should be fewer degrees in majors that don't exist." MAGA sees colleges as trade schools, not institutions that drive our economy through research and innovation. They don't want people to learn anything meaningful about the world.

It makes sense when you just start with the assumption that, like, 85% of what comes out of her mouth is just made up gibberish designed to please an audience of one.

CharlesHogweed @charlierbravo.bsky.social · 28/05/2025
AH, that was an angle that I hadn't considered. I thought it was just wanting to control the output of research done by or funded by the government. It's logical that going around the people who know things calling out MAHA ignorance, it's just a facet of the same thing.

Interestingly, that move began with the Apollo program to a great degree. Digitalization was great when it was primarily giving us productivity tools, much less so when the internet got captured by corporations and sold back to us for clicks on ads.

You're not wrong. Engineers in those days were great at their jobs because they had to be. It also helped that they had national unity, competition with the USSR, and a deep sense of responsibility for the safety of our astronauts to focus and motivate them.

It's always fun to watch MAGA devour itself. www.cnbc.com/2025/05/28/e... This just cracks me up because Elon really doesn't give a fuck about government spending. He got what he wanted, neutering or disposing of the agencies that he sees as impeding his businesses.

I think there's an argument to be made that the rocket failing without exploding *is* a step forward but, overall, the forward steps have been incremental. This and Elon's history of over promising when one of his products will be ready doesn't bode well for on time on budget delivery.

Science requires peer review... which requires publishing in places where your peers would see your work... The only purpose I can see for this new policy is to control the data and results to be published. This is a FRIGHTENING idea.

You may not understand why, but the healthcare insurance and PBM contracts YOU have signed for Tesla, SpaceX , @X, along with CEOs of other big companies , have more impact on healthcare costs and quality of care in this country, than anything you can do with DOGE

If you want to understand why healthcare pricing is horrific, the first thing to know is that our system puts 100% of the credit risk for deductibles, copays and co-insurance on hospitals and doctors. That's insane. We have turned them into Sub Prime Lenders 🧵

This should terrify anyone with a little common sense. Trump has opened our government up to any and all hangers on. It'll be like Ike Perlmutter being on Trump's ML shadow cabinet but so much worse. And this is only the stuff we know. As we learned before, what we don't know is so much worse...

I would agree except with a Kash or Kash-like head of the FBI, what would that background check mean? It'll either be cursory, factually suspect, or accurate and likely disregarded as a box that was checked.

Trump is still running all his businesses while selling random junk. He has a publicly traded company, and he can easily be bribed. He once again will be in violation of the Constitution day 1. Corporate media should do their damn jobs and focus on it, instead of sanewashing him and his nominees.
