Saw Digger at the cinema. Satirical comedy. Oil billionaire ignores warnings of environmental disaster until chunks of Arctic ice calve off and cause devastating tsunamis. Except it's all a play. Except it's set in a future where this did all happen. Dogmatic, heavy-handed, and incoherent.

Saw Spy Kids 1&2. Entertainingly answers the question, "What if Robert Rodriguez made a kids' movie?" Wacky in a wonderfully unexpected anything-goes way. Had the feel of a low-budget Nickelodeon TV series à la Henry Danger. 2nd movie was less good.

Watched Untouchable. Based-on-a-true-story mismatched buddy comedy with heart, about a paraplegic millionaire who hires a street crook as a carer. Refreshingly un-Hollywood. I enjoyed this, my daughter even more so. Why isn't Omar Sy in more stuff?

Saw Blue Velvet. Young man finds a severed ear in a field; cue a sexual awakening and glimpse into the violent world that hides behind suburbia. I've never got on with David Lynch, and this was no exception. Overblown, with stilted dialogue and an especially wooden performance from Kyle MacPlank.

I read The Legend of Charlie Fish by Josh Rountree - I had to, didn't I? In 1900, a man travelling home to Galveston picks up orphans, a fish-man, and deadly enemies. This felt so fresh, full of drama, magic, melancholy, and a relentlessly building tension. Loved it. (Why "Charlie Fish", I wonder?)

Saw Shaun the Sheep: The Beast of Mossy Bottom at the cinema. The farm animals try to save Halloween and end up causing more trouble. This is peak Aardman. Hilarious for young and old alike, with so much character, and entirely dialogue-free. Enjoyed the many cultural references, too.

Rewatched Dogma. Irreverent religious satire by cult filmmaker Kevin Smith. Life of Brian crossed with Good Omens. Similar feeling to Life of Brian, in that it's clearly designed to be provocative, but actually represents a bunch of religious doctrine in a surprisingly thoughtful way. Pretty funny.

Saw Coyote vs. Acme. Wile E. Coyote employs a hapless lawyer to sue the monolithic Acme Corporation. Mixes human actors with cartoons. Made with a lot of love for the old Looney Tunes. Despite feeling occasionally contrived, the humour and heart won me over. Shame on WB for trying to shelve this.

Played Baba Is You on Switch. A brilliant reality-bending puzzler in which you push words around Sokoban-style to redefine various objects. So often this game presented us with a level that seemed ridiculously simple and yet was fiendishly difficult to solve. Genius.

Watched an open-air screening of The Princess Bride as part of Streatham Free Film Festival, and my appreciation for this movie only grew. Star-crossed lovers, swordfights, pirates, magic, despicable baddies - this tongue-in-cheek swashbuckling adventure has it all. So quotable, too.

I played a new-to-me board game: 12 Rivers. Place dams along a river to collect "pearls" (marbles), and select villagers to maximise your score. Looks amazing on the table with the big sloping river board. Much more thinky than the cutesy anime art style suggests. Want to play more. 7/10.

Watched Bad Apples at the cinema. Primary school teacher deals with a problem student in a rather extreme way. A dark comedy of escalating absurdity, but wonderfully restrained in a way that Hollywood is incapable of. I was giggling and squirming in equal measure through the whole movie. Loved it.

I watched The Wailing. Deadbeat goofball cop investigates an escalating series of bizarre murders, with his daughter's life at stake. Tense slow-burn of a movie, punctuated with gore and humour. Pretty Korean landscapes. Atmospheric but overlong.

I watched The Skin I Live In. Traumatised surgeon kidnaps man for revenge therapy. Almodóvar's movies usually put character and relationships first, but this one prioritised plot - at the expense of credible character development/exploration. Maybe the book is better? Also, weirdly abrupt ending.

I saw Laputa: Castle in the Sky. How had I never watched this before?! A boy's hard life in a mining town is disrupted when a princess lands in his arms who is being chased by soldiers and pirates. Miyazaki started strong with his first animated feature film - it's beautiful, compelling, and epic.

Watched Teorema. A young man seduces each member of a bourgeois household, one by one, then leaves them to realise how empty their lives were without him. Abstruse. It has stuff to say about class and identity and meaning and art and sex and faith, and I didn’t get it at all.

Rewatched Mary Poppins with the family, and I had forgotten how perfect a film this is (barring the unfortunate racial slurs from Admiral Boom). The special effects are better than some of the Marvel movies, too. We also watched the 54-years-later sequel, which felt mostly like a bland cash-in.

I read Star Beast by Robert Heinlein. Slightly goofy novel about a kid with a space pet who ends up getting embroiled in high-stakes intergalactic diplomacy. Now that I've read more of the author's work, I get a sense that this is but middling Heinlein. Fun, though!
