The longer I practice medicine and parent, the more and more I see how skills in one translate to the other: modeling good behavior, allowing for failure, showing that you care

My advice, as a journal editor @jhospmedicine.bsky.social, has been to either (1) find a native English speaker with scientific writing experience to join your team, or (2) use ChatGPT or other AI interface to refine your writing.

Honest question: has anyone made a starter packet of pragmatic conservative voices on this platform? I’d love to hear common sense conservative takes on what’s ailing our world.

So true! My caveat is don’t just think of polypharmacy in older adults…any new med, adjustment, or common culprit can tip the balance toward AMS. Surprised how often we miss this in hospital medicine

Medicine focuses a lot on the question “will this help my patient” but not on the question “when will it help my patient.” The latter becomes important as we age. We’ve developed a “time-to-benefit” tool on eprognosis.ucsf.edu to help answer this question. Here is a snapshot #MedSky #FOAMed #meded

Economics (ie. the study of tradeoffs and how people manage them) is a more valuable skill set than organic chemistry and many other biological sciences when applied to being a doctor. End of story.

Academic Tip # 17: Once a week, take a moment to tell someone that you appreciate them and how they help you in your life and work. Then...take a few more minutes and share that comment with their supervisor. Imagine the impact this will have on your community in 1 year.

In academics... We don't do a good enough job of telling people when they do things right. Positive reinforcement on the smallest things (e.g. quick response to email, clear explanation to complex topic, etc) can have + long term impacts on relationships and quality of work

Academic Tip #4: Be nice to all the wonderful administrative assistants who coordinate and set up your meetings and who make the world go round. Even if you've never met them before and just interact via email - tell them how much you appreciate their time and energies.

Academic Tip #543: When you present your work, there are generally two types of people who will give you feedback. Those who will give you praise, and those who will question it. The former feel good. But, you’ll get the most long-term value by listening to the later.

Academic Writing Tip #3: Get rid of adverbs. All of them. They slow your reader down and muddle your story. You think they help, but they don't.

Academic Tip #204: When submitting a manuscript to a journal... Try to suggest reviewers. It can be hard to find appropriate people to review a paper. If you lower the bar for the Review Editor - even just a bit-there are probably better odds your paper will be sent for review.

I’ve grown frustrated with MedTwitter who has for years complained about trolling, misinterpretation, and people’s lack of ability to understand nuance… …to then turn on their own, over interpret a tweet, & leave insensible responses. Come on folks!

Academic tip #68: In academia, sometimes you will have to do something for free for a while before you are paid to do it (eg. Time buy out) Instead of looking at this a “giving away your time”, view it as the opportunity to prove your worth.

Academic Tip #29: Create a personal ‘board of directors’. This is 3-5 mentors who can each advise you on specific areas of your career (clinical, research, education, work-life balance, etc). Why? No one person can fully advise on a modern academic career.

Academic tip #147: In your career, you will be in service to someone, some institution, or some idea. The sooner you figure out who or what that is, the faster you will advance your career.

Some days you’ll take 3 steps forward and 1 step back. Too often, we focus on that 1 step back. Instead, recognize the net positive and keep the big picture in mind (those 2 steps forward!)

As someone who grew up running over to my friend’s houses, knocked on their door and asked if they wanted to play… I have come to hate the term “play date”. But nonetheless, this is the world we live in.

My physician friends who view their work purely as a "job" seem to be the happiest & most content in life. Has the labeling of a career in medicine as a "calling" contributed to the burnout and exhaustion* we see in the field? (*yes, lots of other things contribute too)

An often under-rated and overlook quality in a colleague...Citizenship When people need you to step up, help out, or raise a hand. Do it. Trade shifts, do an extra admission, cover an inbox. These good deeds will not go unnoticed - by your colleagues, or the universe

If you'd asked me 15 years ago "What is the best quality for an academic physician to have?" - I would have answered: Intelligence. Ask me today, and my answer is: the ability to close (aka. can they get the job done) Junior faculty: don't underestimate finishing what you start

Science often glorifies quantitative data and outcomes, and shrugs off qualitative methods. I get it, numbers are easier to digest and recount, but remember... Stories are what raise armies, not data.

What do you miss about residency? Me: the resident lounge - where you’d wander in to find random colleagues from other services, old comfy couches to nap on, and a TV that was always on and tuned to the news or Sportscenter.
