“The question is not whether we can afford to remain within the Convention [ECHR]. It is whether, in an increasingly dangerous world, we can afford not to” Political liars and lightweights, like Badenoch and Farage, must never be allowed to take that risk. www.lawgazette.co.uk/commentary-a...
The Law Society

In short, if Britain were to leave the ECHR, it would not be
'taking back control. It would be surrendering influence over the rules and institutions that help keep us safe.
The debate about the ECHR is too often conducted as though it were a choice between national sovereignty and international law. That is a false choice.
The Convention advances British interests because it reflects British values: liberty under law, democratic government and the accountability of power.
Walking away would not make Britain freer. It would make Britain weaker.

The less the 'public' have control the better. Control is a dangerous word.

... then when we move closer to the EU the other half of Labour MPs will pressure Burnham to move further away because the Unions don't want EU workers coming into the country

To all the people saying: "How can I find time to read to my kid when I have a high-powered full-time job?" I taught high school full time; marked A-level exam papers in my spare time; wrote a bestseller in 4 months and still found time to read to my kid every night. I did give up dusting, though.

The guilty men of the 21st century. Semafor: "Chevron said it plans to dramatically increase its oil drilling next year — its budget is set to jump more than 50% compared to 2025." Not just fiddling while Rome burns - they're rushing to pour more petrol on the fire.

I do find odd that we all apparently enjoy the right to enter a hotel uninvited, go to the guest floors, knock on the doors of complete strangers on the grounds that they are not white - and yet not commit any offence.

Another positive side is that the slaves descendants are living in countries that they very possibly would not be living in otherwise. Always look for the positive.

Any politician calling to leave the ECHR is lying about what that will achieve. It won’t solve any problem or improve our lives It will make us worse off and remove our rights. Just like Brexit. The ECHR belongs to us all. It’s not theirs to take. Please sign www.europeanmovement.co.uk/echr-petition

We should look at history from a different angle as it is always written by the winner. It is an interesting concept to wonder how the Anglo Saxons felt about the Conquest which created a massive change to their way of life. French became the dominant language, the legal system changed.

What about being blunt about what needs fixed and how it can be fixed. Our current welfare model is unsustainable but very likely solutions won't win votes.

If we stopped buying endless new garments, think what that would do for emissions, the garment industry produces more emissions than international aviation and shipping combined.

Didn't Corbyn try that when he was leader of the opposition - it didn't last long. I wish Burnham would stop reinventing the wheel and come up with some fresh ideas.

First we have the Farage-attention-seeking-fanfare press conference to allow him to announce some steaming horseshit policy. Then we have the ‘why it’s steaming horseshit’ aftermath. But it’s already too late. Much like the filth pumped into our rivers and seas, our politics is hideously polluted.

I agree with dementia but I don't agree with everyone getting free care. I am in my 80s We were a fortunate generation, could walk into any job, could buy a house, have foreign holidays, go out for meals, get superannuation pensions and now we want our grandchildren who are struggling to pay.

Charley McC @charley62.bsky.social · 29/07/2026
Those that can afford it should pay for their own care. Why should the younger generation be taxed to pay for care, there will be no money when they are old. It is downright selfish to expect someone else to pay for something that you can well afford.

Wars will be fought over minerals needed for renewables. Lithium, for example, is not easily available in all countries. It has already been suggested that Ukraine allow the USA access to mineral deposits in return for assistance with the war.
