Appropriate that when I search for "crawfish," the LLM overview gives me the same response some dull people in Montgomery gave me when I introduced a bill to create an official state migratory fish -- "can I eat it?"
"AI overview" of "crayfish" that assumes you want to eat it.

Belted Kingfisher. The belted kingfisher is a large, conspicuous water kingfisher, native to North America. This species has a large head with a shaggy crest. Its long, heavy bill is black with a grey base. These features are common in many kingfisher species. 📸: @sriram.udhayab

Knew someone who did 3rd party NLRB complaint investigation. Told me that in January '24, all of the sudden, all meritorious complaints were put on the back burner, and they were told to start prioritizing ones that were (to him) non-obviously meritorious. Told my Congressperson's CoS. Crickets.

Maybe I take this a bit personally because I do legislative work in a red state, but it does really chap my hide to see coastal elites roll over for powerful lobbying interests. Meanwhile folks here are fighting them tooth and nail, from more angles, with fewer resources.

To which I'd say yeah, obviously that's the political reality, but if we ever want to escape big oil having a veto power over Congressional policy, we should probably fight that reality rather than give into it.

The most stark example of this I've seen was when Zach Liscow and other permitting reform proponents on a panel at Yale practically screamed at an environmental lawyer for "making common cause with fossil fuel companies," then immediately turning around and saying...

Again, I'd be much, much less skeptical of "abundance" if it ever required the rentiers and polluters to compromise in favor of protecting public resources. Instead, we're always forced to give away power and control over those resources to profiteers and polluters. Funny how that works.

www.whitehouse.gov/presidential... The president's lack of enthusiasm about the Warren-Scott housing bill gives the game away here. Just like all other "permitting reform" and "abundance" actions, this isn't about affordability, it's about giant polluters' deregulatory wishlists.

My column from Monday. Alabama politicians give voters little but paranoia and niche right-wing issues, which may be why just 37% of voters turned up for the last midterm in 2022. Those politicians who truly want to make a government for Alabama have to restore Alabamians’ faith in the process.

What Alabama voters want is not necessarily what Alabamians want. Because in state elections, most Alabamians don't vote.

*impeachment, removal, conviction for treason specifically is some kind of superimpeachment

Charles R. Miller @charlesmiller.bsky.social · 28/01/2026
Right, but the crazy premise of the original post was that impeachment, removal, conviction is some kind of superimpeachment that wipes out the whole admin. That + character limit is why I only mentioned treason.

Charles R. Miller @charlesmiller.bsky.social · 27/01/2026
There are 2 different interpretations here. The OP is saying "If the president is impeached and removed for treason, then the VP, et al are automatically removed." Not the case. The correct interpretation is that each can be removed individually through conviction after impeachment for treason.

The photo is of a piece of scrip from the Ravensbruck women's concentration camp. It belonged to my late grandfather who was a U.S. Infantryman in WWII. I don't know how he got it, since Ravensbruck was in the East, and was liberated by the Soviets.

But it is necessary to say "never again," even if we know we have failed, to renew a commitment to eradicating not only the horrific expressions of hatred that is genocide, but also to combat the conditions which lead to genocide, totalitarianism, and fascism.

It is difficult to say "never again," after genocide has happened again, in every single succeeding decade. None of them plumb the depths of the Shoah, but they also show us we are not so civilized as we would like to think.

The Holocaust was not only a uniquely evil expression of the darker aspects of human and social nature, but was a result of a politics which allowed people to see others as less than human.

To address this, we must confront past totalitarianism and see where it is reflected in our present political lives. Not only where it breaches the surface as genocide, repression, or war, but also its subterranean elements - politics based in discourses of ignorance, greed, fear

In undergrad, I studied democratization and totalitarianism. In order to achieve the highest and best form of government -- one that allows all people meaningful participation in decisions that will shape their lives -- I thought you also had to understand its opposite.

Perhaps more mind-blowing (or maybe not), the current SCOTUS had the opportunity to overrule these nakedly racist rulings and set Puerto Rico and the other so-called "unincorporated territories" on a more equal footing with the rest of the US, but refused. www.vox.com/2022/4/21/23...

I remember one of the most mind-blowing things I read about during law school was the Insular Cases. SCOTUS just took on whole cloth a bunch of racist arguments from HLR articles and invented a new form of territory.

Can't describe how absurd interacting with this city has been. Every time I thought we'd hit bottom, some other procedural matter would get screwed up. In some sense it was good though. Because it was just the typical Alabama run-around w/o the PR gloss, so at least it was obvious to the public.

Y'all can read the official statement in the article, but just know that my first reaction isn't fit to print. Unbelievable levels of arrogance for a city council to give residents the run-around for a year, then come right back and subject them to it again. 🤬
