The exception that proves the rule is the opening scene of the Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy miniseries. They turned people walking into the room and sitting down into very effective character introductions.

Leaving aside the Zionism for a moment, my question is what is Tate's "exact voice"? You know what, don't answer that.

This is "I'd like to see old Donnie wriggle out of this one" without any self awareness. If the system worked, we wouldn't be where we are.

I fundamentally disagree with this argument that fascism is a holdover from prehistoric societies rather than an inherently modern phenomenon. Short thread.

The underlying assumption here is that owning a car gives you the right to endanger other people's lives, but riding a bike makes you a second class citizen, who must remain subservient and vulnerable at all times.

PSA: Tidal default setting is to include AI songs in the algorithmic playlist generated when the album you're listening to ends. I'm agnostic on the algorithm as a way of discovering new music, but at the very least I want it to play me music created by actual humans.

I think the funniest response to this dogshit take would be to say "actually the Chinese response to poetry and music is just so subtle as to be invisible to your tiny Western mind."

This is not the difficult question that it is for some artists (Polanski, Woody Allen, etc.) "HP is a mildly entertaining hodgepodge of fantasy tropes" and "Rowling uses the HP money to fund a hateful discrimination campaign" are two true and logically independent statements.

I agree with the rest of this thread, but this post is the equivalent of insisting we use only the strictly Marxist definition of class while ignoring all cultural meaning. Development intensity has real meaning and effects on people's lives.

Too much of the motivation for the hard left is hating the Democratic Party, and not enough of the motivation is hating capitalism and fascism. I hope you're wrong about Platner, but a Nazi tattoo and a willingness to kill brown people for the American empire are... not great signs.

Yup. It's fine to say "America is great because it welcomes immigrants like Flo Balogun." But the reality is so many USMNT players grew up in countries that value mass participation and meritocracy, instead of parents jockeying for scholarships.

Until we address the fact most talented soccer players in the US can’t afford to compete because club and travel teams have snuffed rec/school ball out, this is probably going to keep happening.

I think lots of people claim to be superior precisely BECAUSE they know their position is due to luck. The louder they scream about who is deserving and who is not, the more it seems that all those social inequalities are natural.

This makes me nostalgic for a time when parents justified the insane focus on sports by arguing that it taught values like team spirit and dedication. That was 90% bullshit, but it was better than deluding themselves into hoping for free college tuition.
