Swan Lake as a tragedy, or Swan Lake with a happy ending?

Listen. I hate AI. But it's also fucking hilarious to me that someone used it to completely extrapolate all the Adobe software's code and create a perfect clone of it, which is now available for free.

Anyway, yeah. This is what I want to see. This is what I need to see, actually. I'm tired of buying something only to realize it's partially AI slop.

Checking grammar is not AI at all. And why would you need AI to format your book? Not only are there professional formatters out there, but if you don't want to pay someone to do it, there are literal whole-ass templates out there you can use. Buy once, use forever.

That localization is in the game. Not in my language, but in other languages. Brainstorming WILL make it into a book in one way or another. That's not your work. If AI-generated brainstorming isn't a dealbreaker for someone, that's on the consumer to decide. Not the author.

Aeryn Christie @chaoskirin.art · 17h
This isn't impossible, either. Steam already makes people do this with games. One I recently looked at states that AI is used for "localization only." I can make an informed decision on that. How many translators might have lost a job over an AI translation?
110
Aeryn Christie @chaoskirin.art · 17h
Second... A lot of the stuff that's "allowed" shouldn't be. Brainstorming is vital for developing an original story. If you ask AI to brainstorm for you, it's only giving you things that have already been done. If we're regulating in accountability, ANY use of AI has to be disclosed.
110
Aeryn Christie @chaoskirin.art · 17h
Second, all the people who think authors have some sort of get rich quick scheme going on will be disincentivized to create volumes of slop. I don't think this is too much to ask. This is actually common sense stuff. I don't know why NO ONE has acted to regulate this.

Aeryn Christie @chaoskirin.art · 17h
In summary, this protects real authors by making it impossible to accuse someone who's actually written the material of AI use. That is becoming dismally popular to do these days. Storing the generated data and making it searchable virtually eliminates this possibility.
110
Aeryn Christie @chaoskirin.art · 17h
Consumers should have a say in what they purchase, and their decisions should be 100% informed. I truly think AI books should be banned completely, but if they're going to exist, they must be disclosed. At three "responsible" civil infractions, the fourth infraction becomes a misdemeanor.
120
Aeryn Christie @chaoskirin.art · 17h
...accommodate this storage of data. Not only will a high cost make it less likely for sloppers to use this method to create books, but it will be a non-negotiable record of the same. It should also be a civil infraction for any slopper to publish art or writing without disclosing AI use.
110
Aeryn Christie @chaoskirin.art · 17h
That way if someone wants to accuse an author of AI, they don't have to do it publicly. They can send out a request to various AI companies to see if that author used AI. The database should be searchable by text string. The FOIA should be free. The cost of generating needs to go WAY up to...
110
Aeryn Christie @chaoskirin.art · 17h
...tell for sure. The watermarks on text must not be tampered with. Records need to be maintained for every word the generative AI spits out, and those records should be FOIA-able. They aren't copyrightable, so anyone should be able to get them. No subpoenas.

Aeryn Christie @chaoskirin.art · 17h
I haven't had time to reply to this until now, but I'll echo what my peers have said already. This is a good step, but there are no consequences at all for lying or misleading, so there have to be regulations around misrepresentation. There also has to be a way to...

Aeryn Christie @chaoskirin.art · 07/10/2026
Yikes. You know I've been saying AI is not actually intelligent and can't "go rogue" for years. It's a text prediction tool. The fact that people just believe the AI itself is a danger and not the people running the software makes me lose all hope.

I contacted Pawp to see if I should take my cat to the emergency vet tonight but they're AI now and the AI asked me if I thought my cat might be suicidal and then stopped responding. XD

It is what it is, though. Thanks for your time!

Yeah that's unfortunate. I'm terrible at marketing. I'd rather write the book and spend 0 time gathering a social media following. I don't even know how to do it, TBH! I kinda wish the market would shift away from that. Sometimes I feel like tradpub is losing a lot of talent by pushing socials.

Aeryn Christie @chaoskirin.art · 05/10/2026
I don't know what trad editors will pick up. I'd like to try, but I don't want to do it for no reason. Please be honest with your opinion. Thanks!

Thanks! I have written what I think is the best book I have in me. It's part 1 of a series. I published it indie, but if I query the next two books in the series, is there any chance an agent could pick up the trilogy? Just looking at options.

Burnt tires are awful. New tires? Best smell. Walking into a tire store is like heaven.

...being like "well, the house was dismissed! We can't break the rules and do anything now!" and then circle-jerking each other about how good they follow the rules.

Aeryn Christie @chaoskirin.art · 02/10/2026
As if simply mentioning the illegality of the thing has checked off the only necessary "do something" box. Why didn't congressional dems stay in Washington when Mike Johnson dismissed the house? Why aren't they working to do something? I can picture them sitting around...
120
Aeryn Christie @chaoskirin.art · 02/10/2026
There's lots of other things, too, but I'm thinking of it now again because 47 continues to do vastly illegal things, like paying for ads with tax dollars, and all I see are Democrats posting things like "uh that's illegal, you shouldn't do that" and other dems patting those dems on the back.

How there's actual, real evidence that the last election was tampered with, both domestically and abroad, but they won't "stoop to that level" and investigate. Despite the fact that there is actual evidence and not just feelings being hurt as in the 2020 election.

Aeryn Christie @chaoskirin.art · 02/10/2026
I don't think it's a secret anymore that the Good Place committee is an analogue for US Democrats. (Was it ever a secret?) I remember giving up on them entirely when they were peacocking around just after the 2024 election being all proud of themselves for handing over power in the "right way."
120
Aeryn Christie @chaoskirin.art · 02/10/2026
There's a line in the Good Place I think about a lot. "The Titanic is sinking, and they're writing a strongly-worded letter to the iceberg." It's about how the Good Place committee is so wrapped up in procedure and decorum that they don't actually do anything to help.

So she clarified that she meant "those people" were violent. I said "oh, you mean white men? Because any time I've been uncomfortable, it's been because of white men." She didn't respond after that. Make them say exactly what they mean. Don't let them dance around it. Make them confront it.

Aeryn Christie @chaoskirin.art · 01/10/2026
It took her a couple days to respond, and she dodged around the question. She told me to "check the news story" because it was about that. I told her I'd watched it, but I didn't see what that had to do with her comment. I said if she knew about a plot to attack me, she should tell me.

I said a healthy community had no room for racism and bigotry and we should love all our neighbors. Someone responded that I'd feel that way until one of the men attacked me. So I responded saying I didn't understand. Was she planning to send someone to attack me? Should I call the police?

Someone from the Muslim community posted a plea to the local group asking the residents of the city to use their hearts and think about how the report was designed to incite, and the problem wasn't with people of color at all. I posted in support.

I have been asking people to explain what they mean when they make bigoted remarks lately. Our local Fox network ran a story about how our city was being "overrun" by foreign interests. (That is... There's "too many brown people here now" in bigot-speak.)

I should specify: An editor in traditional publishing.

I need the advice of a fiction book editor. Any editor! I will not try to sell you my book. I just have a question that really only an editor can answer, I think.

This forces a hire without incentivizing the store to remove self checkouts. I know people who use self check-outs are excited about this potential discount, but it only applies if there are self checkouts to use.

Even a 0.5% tax credit per cashier hired over a certain number would go toward getting more people hired, and this is a tax credit that actually gives back to the community instead of taking from it. Or make a rule that requires a certain number of people per square footage on the floor instead.
120
Aeryn Christie @chaoskirin.art · 30/09/2026
The answer isn't to punish stores for having self checkouts, it's to incentivize the stores into hiring more people. You can't really punish people out of doing things unless you write very complicated laws. You have to reward them instead.

Aeryn Christie @chaoskirin.art · 30/09/2026
3. I prefer self check-out. If this makes the self checkout go away, I would be unhappy. I know we're trying to get jobs for people here, but I don't want to wait in line with people with 300 things in their cart and then talk to someone while I'm checkout out. I prefer the self process.
120
Aeryn Christie @chaoskirin.art · 30/09/2026
2. This also incentivizes self check-out. Which means more people will be in those lines, which means the need for cashiers will dwindle. Even coupon moms who hate self checkouts will learn how to use them if they get a 10% discount on everything.
120
Aeryn Christie @chaoskirin.art · 30/09/2026
In the second, lines stretch for hours. So safeguards would have to be built into the system to prevent the firing of cashiers, or to prevent the removal of self checkout lines. Which is getting dangerously close to telling a business how to run. And hell, maybe we need that.
120
Aeryn Christie @chaoskirin.art · 30/09/2026
The problem with the 10% self-checkout discount in NYC is this: 1. Stores would find a way to cut costs in other ways. Either firing a cashier, or doing away with all self checkouts and not hiring anyone to take up the slack. In the first scenario, someone (or multiple people) lose their job.

The more meta gets, the more powerful its AI product is, and ultimately, if the bubble deosn't burst, it will be worth more than, say, anyone who tries to source data ethically. The kicker is, people don't fucking care! They will hand over all their data 'cuz it makes lives easier!
120
Aeryn Christie @chaoskirin.art · 29/09/2026
I don't think people understand the scale of data that's needed to run AI. If there are a million people on a site and only 500 share their art with the AI, the AI won't be able to generate anything recognizable. It NEEDS millions of images.
