‘No Songbird (Ivory-Billed Woodpecker). Traditional gouache painting on 22x30 inch white watercolor paper. From my ‘Extinction Stories’ solo exhibition, this piece is inspired by the disappearance of the ‘Lord God Bird’ from the Louisiana ‘Singer Tract’ in the mid 20th century. #sciart #birdart #🪶

The last breeding pair of Ivory-Billed Woodpeckers were documented in Louisiana in the late 1930s. Their best was located on a piece of land owned by the Singer Sewing Machine Company.

Legislative steps were taken to the defend the birds, but before they could take effect the land was clearcut. Protective restrictions would have ruined the economic value of the land to its owners.

The ‘Singer Tract’ birds were never seen again.
