Today, Google announced that it is overhauling the principles governing how it uses artificial intelligence and other advanced technology. The company removed language promising not to pursue “technologies that cause or are likely to cause overall harm,” “weapons or other technologies whose principal purpose or implementation is to cause or directly facilitate injury to people,” “technologies that gather or use information for surveillance violating internationally accepted norms,” and “technologies whose purpose contravenes widely accepted principles of international law and human rights.”

ICE went to the home of a 61-year-old man with poor health and after his family informed ICE agents that they needed a warrant signed by a judge, dozens of ICE agents instead showed up in an armored vehicle with a battering ram and flash grenades and took him by force.

One thing I’m seeing is people saying “I’m not leaving Substack just because there are people there I disagree with.” Ok but Substack is PAYING those people to be there. They are paying Bari Weiss, for example. It’s not like Wordpress which is just a host. Substack is making editorial decisions.

Currently reading this stellar work of true crime/historical nonfiction. I haven’t seen large-scale detail so well rendered around one particular incident this well outside of a good novel (e.g., Alais Escobar Henri’s ‘The Voluptuaires’).

Something that made me smile bright this year was CONSUMMATE appearing in Witch Craft ( femalerage.substack.com/p/consummate ) which after a long & fabulous run is drawing to a close this year. Thx @saderotica.bsky.social for letting me be part of this super cool, dark, weird mag you created. 🤍🩶🖤

Story excerpt reads:

“Oh, relax. It’s like two drops. It’s nothing. I’ve licked more than that from you in one sitting.” He smirked a little. “Do you not like it that I’m sharpening knives, Mack?”

“Well, you can’t snuggle me and do that,” I said. I was careful to smile just right, to keep my tone light. I emphasized the word snuggle. I made a silly face.

“Sure I can,” Jamie drawled. He lifted his arm. “Come here, baby.”

“NOPE,” I said, forcing a laugh. My whole body tensed up. I inhaled and relaxed my shoulders so I wouldn’t look upset. “Not with all those sharp steel points over there. No way, man.”

Jamie cracked a smile and put the knives away. He put his arms around me; I relaxed against him. A quiet whirlpool sensation moved through my torso; it took a couple minutes for me to associate it with the word anger. I pushed it away.
