Also I would suggest we stop referring to Meta, Twitter, etc. as “social” media. They are corporate media through and through.

Gotta agree here. It’s like saying “during AIDS.” HIV never went anywhere; it can cause serious illness - though thankfully it’s somewhat manageable now. But referring to it, or COVID, in the past tense can downplay the risk and contribute to the common belief that the danger is over. It’s not.

This is great news, but I can’t help but wonder if our provincial health authorities (I’m in BC) will once again throw up roadblocks to anyone who doesn’t fit their narrow definition of “deserving.” Fingers crossed but not holding my breath.

The first time Charlie Chaplin used his voice in a film, he wielded it to forcefully condemn the rising forces of fascism around the globe. Will we listen to his words today?

Suet is a big hit here on Gabriola Island, BC! It’s cool to see the little birds poking around on the ground under the feeder for the crumbs dropped by the big birds. Very symbiotic ☯️🐤

4/4 I’m not suggesting we stay quiet, however. There’s a lot we can do to resist the Turd Reich without resorting to goofy AI memes. This article has some great suggestions about how to resist in a meaningful way. icydak.substack.com/p/the-30-mos...

3/4 (And don't get me started on the environmental cost of AI image generation. Creating just one image uses up to 1 kWh of total energy, including AI model training, GPU processing and data centre infrastructure. That's equivalent to running a microwave on high for a full hour. For just one image.)

2/4 …cathartic as it may feel, creating yet another goofy image of Trump dressed as a chicken, or sucking Elon’s toes, or as a baby in Putin’s lap, and posting it on Bluesky where most people already agree, simply reinforces our shared indignation without leading to meaningful action.

Charles @channelcharles.bsky.social · 06/06/2025
1/4 Unpopular take: No offence, but can we please stop with all the AI generated anti-Trump memes? Don’t get me wrong. Trump and his ilk are festering cancers on the soul of humanity, and it’s natural to want to express your anger and outrage, horror and disgust. But…
A montage of AI generated images of Donald Trump dressed as a chicken, dressed as a taco, dressed as a chicken eating a taco, wearing a taco hat... you get the idea

I’m so sorry for your loss. Losing a sibling is one thing, but losing a child, as you did, must be unspeakably wrenching. When my brother died, our mom was disconsolate. She’s gone now too, but she carried the grief in her heart until her dying day. 💔

I’m really sorry people have abandoned you because of your LC. That’s just inexcusable. But think of it this way: *they’re* the ones missing out; you can hold your head high.

Charles @channelcharles.bsky.social · 05/06/2025
I know! What’s even more maddening - a lot of people today don’t even seem to care about protecting *their own children* - no masks, no vaccines, indifference... I’d have thought the instinct to protect one’s own offspring would be unbreakable. Guess not 😕

Charles @channelcharles.bsky.social · 04/06/2025
You’re right, and it’s heartbreaking. What’s worse, I’ve almost given up trying to enlighten people who don’t want to be enlightened. It’s exhausting and frustrating. I’m very lucky to have a life partner who shares my awareness. I know many aren’t so lucky.

I’m so sorry for your loss too. Even after all these years, I really miss my brother. The immediate pain does fade a bit over time but the feeling of loss never goes away. Still, part of me is glad he doesn’t have to experience how awful things are now. Thank you for your thoughts ❤️

6/7 The answer: I can’t tell him these things. I won't. I will not taint my relationship with my brother’s ghost with the wretched reality of the world today.

5/7 How do I convey that the bright light of humanity - our drive to learn, to understand, to quest for knowledge, to make things better for the next generation - is dimming before our eyes, extinguished by greed, by hubris, by willful ignorance and by paralyzing laissez-faire?
1162
Charles @channelcharles.bsky.social · 04/06/2025
4/7 How do I explain that a new virus has killed millions in just five years and will kill, sicken and disable millions more over time - but that most people can’t be bothered to take even the simplest, most basic steps to protect themselves and one another?

Charles @channelcharles.bsky.social · 04/06/2025
3/7 How do I tell him that climate collapse is no longer coming in some far off future, but that it's already begun, that mass extinction is underway, and that people are just ignoring the crisis while continuing gleefully to contribute to it?

Charles @channelcharles.bsky.social · 04/06/2025
2/7 …these conversations have now stopped. Why? Because even though he’s just a ghost, I can’t bear to tell my dead brother how awful the world has become. The entitlement. The greed. The hatred. The toxic individualism. The utterly stupid disregard for science.

1/7 My brother died in 2001 and I used to have imaginary conversations with him about things that have happened since: “They tore down our old house!” “Liz and Dave split up!” “There’s this thing called the iPhone!” It’s been my way of keeping his memory alive in my heart. But…
