i’ve spent the last 4ish RGG5 play sessions going through Saejima’s hunting quests like “oh man this is kinda bold to put absolutely none of the typical RGG loop in Saejima’s part of the story even as the hunting is pretty simple and boring..” and then it hit me. none of this has been voiced..

obviously limiting to say every game should contort itself to have natural divots and break points.. but oh man it’s been working for me. that handheld juice. turning off the game when the game tells you to turn it off—try it out sometime! play for ~15 min, turn it off. so gold!

just dropping a random, very specific thought about RGG5 that may turn into a larger thing: the conversation Saejima has with Kosaka where Kosaka tells Saejima escape his prison is such a good microcosm of RGG’s worst character writing tendencies. completely devoid of pathos.

Solatorobo one of the few examples of a game i think is wholly terrible—every conceivable front both isolated, to the best that one can even consider a work in that way, and taking in all parts working in tandem—but am very happy for the people who get something out of it!! glad it exists!!

among lots of things about Sun & Moon, i often think about the deliberate inversion of the route 1 bug archetype that had long been displaced from its original didactic context in RBY (bug types are just Pokémon now!) so it doesn’t evolve until the end of the game and has more SpAtk than Xerneas
