I only allow papers with my name on it to be submitted when they are generally ready to be submitted for peer review. Usually we submit a week or two before sending to a journal so that we can get feedback from the community about citations etc. But overall, we’ve polished it.

Had she posted her papers on the arXiv at the time of submission, this would have really forced her PhD advisor's hand on giving her the PhD. But without public accountability, he actually got away with this. She eventually got a PhD in a different field, leaving astronomy. 🔭

It turned out that she had submitted her main thesis results for publication, and the referee contacted her PhD advisor, and suggested they redo them with a slightly different technique. The PhD advisor agreed (fucker!!!!!!!!!!) and they basically stole her PhD. She left without a degree.

In my experience, there are a lot of people who don't submit to the arXiv until their paper is accepted. And here is how that can screw early career researchers: When I was a NASA postdoc, one of my officemates came in one day and started packing. A PhD student. We thought she had finished. NOPE!

The ability to post to the arXiv anyway means that the paper is still out there for people to consider, without a certain person's emotional reaction functioning as a filter for it. That's part of the value of the arXiv to early career researchers, actually.

This was actually really hard on me because the concept of this paper was the first publishable idea I ever had, and I was really proud that I had developed the concept and with Simon's help, deployed it. I was a PhD student and Simon was a postdoc. The ref was a full professor. 🔭

I'll use my first ever paper as a case in point. This paper is critical of a theory called "doubly special relativity." We sent it to a journal, who sent it to the creator of the theory we were criticizing, who wrote an ***expletive-filled*** review. Deeply unprofessional; we gave up. 🔭
