This morning, the operator of an Arch mirror in Ukraine announced that they were decommissioning their mirror due to “continuous attacks on energy and network infrastructure”. 🇺🇦
From: Ilya Zlobintsev
To: arch-mirrors@lists.archlinux.org >
9:11 AM
Subject: Decomissioning the repo.hyron.dev package mirror

Unfortunately, due to continuous attacks on energy and networking infrastructure, I'm no longer able to maintain stable operation of the mirror. As such, I'm requesting it to be removed from the mirrorist.

I don't know why the 2011 Mediocrity came to mind recently, but I would unironically drive this car. Subaru's ad campaign for a bland, beige sedan was intended to be a parody, but you know what? I bet this thing is reliable as hell, and there's nothing to break. mattelhardt.com/clients/figh...
An unremarkable mid-size beige sedan, as basic and bland as you can possibly imagine. The word "MEDIOCRITY" is shown above it.A side view of a beige sedan. Utterly unremarkable. The dash of a poorly-appointed sedan from 2011. But there are real buttons galore! Not a touch screen to be found. The radio has a CD player (ooo la la!), the HVAC is as uncomplicated as can be, and what's that? Why, it's a digital clock! I haven't seen one of those in years! The center console of a mid-size sedan is shown. Nothing fancy here.

They’re wonderful companions. :) They’re happy just to be around their people! Lots of attitude, too. 😂 Shellie looks like such a sweetheart. This is Rhea; she was the queen of the house and knew it.

A friendly cat would absolutely draw me to an axe murderer’s house.
A screenshot of a Google Maps listing for the Villisca Axe Murderer House. It has a blurb at the bottom, presumably automatically generated, that reads “know before you go: look for the friendly resident cat named Church roaming the property.”

Spot the issue with Belton, Missouri’s Carry Nation Days festival.
Carry Nation Days - One of Belton's biggest weekends is almost here...and this year feels extra special Carry Nation Days returns May 29-30...come celebrate Belton Strong. There's live music, a drone show, Kids Pedal Pull, Miss Belton, 90+ vendors, food trucks, and a Beer Garden...all right on Main Street. And this year, keep your eyes on the sky: the drone formations carry a little extra meaning for a milestone year in American history. There's too much happening to list it all. You'll just have to show up.

Apropos of nothing, Hutchinson has a wonderful zoo and I would recommend it to anyone. Their river otter exhibit in particular is excellent, and when we were there it felt like we had the entire place to ourselves!

Holy moly, I’m picking up Voice of Tigray Revolution out of Ethiopia tonight! An 8,000 mile distance from Addis Ababa to Kansas City. I’m not using anything fancy, just my Sihuadon R-108 and a 20 foot length of wire strewn across my living room.

I did a double-take when I saw this. The post office in Grain Valley, Missouri is the same! maps.app.goo.gl/rR4xrqw3EkUjBgNWA?g…
A small United States Post Office built in the midcentury modern style. It has light brown brick and red-painted wood siding, with two glass windows on either side. The roof is wide and low. It’s quaint and lovely!

Today we discovered Monkey Mountain, a county park on 855 acres with beautiful wooded hiking trails and bits of pastureland sprinkled throughout. All of it hardly used; we had the whole park to ourselves this evening as we explored one of the pastures.
A pasture is shown, with a couple of hay bales nearby. It’s nearing dusk, and the trees framing the pasture reflect an orange sunset just off frame. A trail is leading the viewer into the distance.

Butterflies weren’t the only ones enjoying the butterfly garden at the Dillon Nature Center today; there were also lots of Common Eastern Bumble Bees! The number of pollinators we saw doing their thing was simply delightful.

I saw this little fella at the Hutchinson Zoo yesterday. A yellow-shouldered drone fly was busily pollinating this Lindheimer’s beeblossom.
A yellow-shouldered drone fly, named because it resembles a honeybee drone, is landed on a beautiful pink flower and is busily pollinating it. Pink flowers just like it dot the background throughout.

Free lawnmowers are my jam. They usually just require the carb to be cleaned or, in today’s case, the idle set screw to be adjusted. Now it just needs an oil change, a blade sharpening, and a good wash, and it’ll be ready to donate. :)
A red lawnmower that is a bit worn, but it has plenty of life left in it for someone who needs it.

Good news, friends! As recompense for allowing my personal information to be exposed in a data breach, ParkMobile is generously offering to give me $0.25 off their service fees up to four times!

My best friend gave me a Chipolo CARD Spot that he didn’t have any use for. I was surprised to find that it is not rechargeable—after its battery depletes, it simply becomes e-waste. I cracked it open to see what battery they’re using, and sure enough, it’s a (theoretically) rechargeable LiMnO2.
The internals of a Chipolo CARD Spot, showing the board and battery. The battery is a wafer-thin, 500mAh LiMnO2. Theoretically rechargeable, but the company chose not to.

I’ve been lurking in the HVAC subreddits. Why do people consult ChatGPT when posting in a sub full of experts?
Original post shows a GIF of water leaking from an HVAC unit. The poster asks the following:

“What is leaking here and how appproximately how expensive is it going to be to have repaired? Can I just turn those two yellow levers to shut off the water? Thanks!”

The top reply says “Your actuator has shit the bed. Use yellow handle valves to shut off water”

OP replies “Chatgpt is saying those are refrigerant lines and they wont stop the water?”

The commenter replies “Guess who is wrong there”

My 11yo stepson got a Leapfrog talking globe for his birthday, and it doesn’t recognize Taiwan as a country. Even when I tap it with the stylus it says “People’s Republic of China” from the speaker.

Also, THE INFLATABLE CHRISTMAS GOOSE STILL STANDS. 🪿 I am victorious against nature! This last time I had to clear out some space for the fan because it was completely covered in snow.
An inflatable Christmas goose stands outside on the front lawn, which is completely covered in a thick blanket of snow. It is night, but the goose is lit both by its internal LEDs as well as by the Christmas lights on the porch behind it that I have yet to remove.

Loving all the snow in Kansas City! I broke out the snowblower to get ahead of the blizzard conditions to come. As if on queue, the blizzard arrived as soon as I finished! Inflatable Christmas goose pictured. He’s needed to be cleared of ice a couple times today, but he’s a fighter.
A picture taken of the street outside my house. Six inches of snow has fallen on the ground, and though I’ve taken a snowblower to it, you wouldn’t know it because of the volume of snow falling. It’s beautiful.

I’ve been listening to @kcur.org’s sister station, Classical KC, in the evenings on my beloved Sangean WR-16. I own a few radios (more being steadily added to the collection), but this is by far my most treasured for its beautiful wood enclosure and incredible sound.

Here’s the first batch of shutters I made. Not too shabby, if I do say so myself! We’re in the process of giving the exterior of the house a much-needed uplift. Brick was painted a few weeks ago, now we’re working on shutters, and after that we plan on stripping and staining the columns.
Handmade wooden shutters, stained a solid gray, are hung on a white brick house.

Based on what I’ve been able to find, there seems to be only one company still producing cases for the first generation Raspberry Pi Model B, and they might just be selling off old stock. It seems quality, though! I have newer RasPis, but nothing hits like the original. ❤️ What a gem. #raspberrypi
