JULY 21, 1930 Executive Order 5398 combined the Veterans' Bureau, Bureau of Pensions, and National Home into one agency. Frank Hines was sworn in as first administrator two days later. The new agency reused the old seal — swapping 'BUREAU' for 'ADMINISTRATION' and stamping 1930 inside the buckle.

By 1871, roughly 300,000 remains had been reinterred across 73 national cemeteries and soldiers' lots. Graves were first marked with wooden headboards. In 1873 the Army approved the first durable marble headstone — the design we still know today.

Women make up 21% of the active-duty Navy, but account for only about 7% of active-duty admirals. Yet this year, for the first time in over a decade, no female active-duty naval officers are likely to be promoted to admiral. Neither gender nor race should impact promotions.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is investigating the fatal shooting of 20-year-old Tyrin Johnson by two Tennessee National Guard soldiers assigned to the Memphis Safe Task Force during an early Sunday morning foot pursuit in downtown Memphis. Our statement:
The Chamberlain Network is saddened by the fatal shooting involving members of the Tennessee National Guard deployed to Memphis.
The known facts are grave. A young American is dead, and two National Guard soldiers now carry the weight of that responsibility.
We urge the appropriate authorities to conduct a thorough, transparent investigation. Johnson’s family, the city of Memphis, and the soldiers involved deserve a full public accounting of what happened, what orders governed the encounter, and why National Guard members were placed in that role.
While we wait for the facts to emerge, what is clear is that members of the National Guard were put in an impossible position. If we truly respect the Natioanl Guard we must commit ourselves as a nation to refuse to place service members in missions they were not meant to own. Public safety is best led by accountable civilian institutions, not the military.
Our hearts are with Tyrin Johnson’s family, the soldiers involved, and the city of Memphis in this difficult moment.
