One of my friends tried using AI to draft his historic fantasy baseball team. One of his starting pitchers was Ken Griffey Jr.

Animorphs 33, the part of the torture scene where he experiences every animal cruelty case he's ever read about and then the death of every animal he's ever eaten.

There was a fly named Phthiria relativitae (theory o' relativity). Joke names aren't allowed, so the scientist who proposed the name published it in a Polish journal so they wouldn't catch the pun. But it later turned out it's not in the Phthiria genus, so now it's Poecilognathus relativitae.

That would kill a lot of players. It would be better to start two players next to each other on a sideline and make them race for it.

Solving chess is a mathematical concept that has been around since before Musk was born. Accomplishing it would require more computing power than all of the data centres in the world running for thousands of years.

I love Wildermyth! What did you decide to do with the cursed dagger?

Wildermyth has a setting where you choose which player controls which character. It's in the character sheet

I think the appeal of human-made art is similar to the reason I enjoy watching a livestream more than I enjoy watching a 10-year-old recording of a livestream. A conversation with AI is unappealing because no one is reacting to what I say, and art is a form of communication

It would be wild for this record to belong to a player with fewer than 300 regular season homers. Altuve's postseason homer rate is 93% higher than his regular season home run rate.

I think some people have the mistaken impression that their clothes are made by a robotic assembly line because so many products are, when in fact almost all clothes are produced by a woman sitting at a sewing machine.

This is the most important thing men can do, and they must be doing it immediately. People create culture. People can change it. If you can't remember the last time you created some social awkwardness by telling another man to stop with that shit, you probably aren't pulling your weight.

If you really wanted to, you could recreate the first half with NBA 2K27, and then it's just a matter of hiring two voice actors for the commentary. I don't think current video generators are capable of recreating the second half of the story.

At the start of BG3 I failed the dice roll to recruit Gale, and an hour into the game I googled "When do you recruit Gale", then I had to go back and roll that die again so I could recruit the character I wanted to play with.

If we expand the scope to all major leagues, Turkey Stearnes had 15 consecutive 140+ seasons to start his career and Josh Gibson had 14.

Scherzer's ERA this season while not trying to pitch through injury is 4.33. I think he comes back for either the Jays or the Nats next year.

Just gonna say in 24 hours I have not seen a single apology at any level by anyone who used the article as an excuse to bash Covid cautious people or queer people as a whole. I have not seen a word from people who gleefully referred to disabled people as “wreckers”. Not one single oops.

I know! After Kirk my next choice was Varland but that's out. Springer, Barger, and Scherzer must have been popular too - seems like poor planning to just get a grab-bag of letters instead of accounting for the popular names.

I got a cheap jersey at an event run by some gambling site. They put the name and number on it right there, and they told me they ran out of Rs because of Guerrero. I wanted Kirk, but decided to get Yesavage.

What if you invested a trillion dollars on the premise of gorillas being able to solve rubiks cubes, and then you showed a gorillas lots of videos of people in gorilla suits solving them, and started screaming for publicity every time the real gorilla rotated the rubiks cube?

I loved the plotline where he didn't trust the interpreters and Toranaga was also clearly suspicious about the accuracy of the translations. Once Blackthorne became conversant in Japanese, I found the show a lot less interesting.

Brutal way to go out, I assume Espada figured there was no one left in the bullpen that he trusted. I hope Hader gets at least 2 more scoreless outs this season to bring his ERA below 1.00.

We are all getting disconnected in the same way. Back when there were 5 TV channels and 10 radio stations, everybody talked about the same shows. Nowadays I can meet someone with similar interests and personality who hasn't watched anything I've watched and vice versa.

I'm an economist so I'm aware that our de facto job is to get hired to endorse a policy, no matter how inane and wrong it is. LLMs are extremely good at doing that job.

There's a paragraph in The Science Of Hitting where he says the best stat to measure a hitter's ability will be one where Babe Ruth is first and Ted Williams is second. Then he concludes that OBP plus SLG passes that bar, decades before OPS was a mainstream stat.

Reminds me of the story of coach Ted Williams telling a batter "Every fucking pitcher is the stupidest piece of shit I've ever seen" and then, noticing his team's pitchers staring at him, added "Except you guys".

I've heard this applied to fencing and fighting games, and it's nonsense there as well. There's a slight effect where brand-new Major League Baseball players perform better than expected because of unfamiliarity, but you have to be the 1000th-best player in the world for that advantage to matter.

It's an overly serious critique of a bit of children's book worldbuilding that was clearly made up in 10 seconds. Precious metal arbitrage really did cause an economic crisis for China in the 17th century. Anyway, after a few chapters, the fanfic becomes an Ender's Game ripoff and I stopped reading

That's like the opposite of me, I've been to 10 MLB games and the team I was cheering for lost every time. I've been to 4 Blue Jays losses. When I go to any other game I cheer for the home team, so I've seen the following teams lose at home: Expos, Giants, Angels, Rockies x3.

People have coded bots capable of beating Pokémon Red. The thing is that using an LLM is really, really inefficient compared to using Python's computer vision suite, or simply viewing the RAM directly to help the bot understand where it is and what's going on.

He's got currently the 14th-best single-season ERA for anyone with 35+ IP, and three more scoreless outings would put him in the top 10.
