Don’t you love it when the university’s mandatory annual HR code of conduct and compliance training includes completely fake quotes like this one?
Definitely AI-generated HR “code of conduct” training slide that has the quote “Integrity is doing the right thing. Even when no one is watching.” Misattributed to CS Lewis, and superimposed over a group of diverse women sitting or standing at a table.

It's a tragedy that we continue to individualize bearing the risk of mobility, largely in response to the irrational and emotional place of the automobile in American life.

I like the idea that the shows I like all happen in the same universe. It's rewarding to see that Brianna Barksdale not only ended up in witness protection, but got a medical degree and became a hospital administrator in Pittsburgh. Those gangster/administrator skills definitely overlap.

This is quite absurd, of course. And unsurprising for an economist in a law school. But, it's also the same mentality that in 2017 gave us historians saying, "the confederate statutes weren't even put up until the 1920s," as if that fact, put in the right order, changed their meaning.

"This film set in the past isn't authentic" is the lowest form of historical film criticism.

Goya's capricho No. 6, "Nadie se conoce," has that excellent ambivalence of meaning both "No one knows themselves" and "No one knows each other." The masquerade performs the way that the monstrousness of the neighbor mirrors the monstrousness of the self, and the other way around.
Capricho 6 by Francisco Goya, inscribed in Spanish "Nadie se conoce." The image shows a masked man bowing before a masked woman, as if at a masquerade ball. Behind are weird and frightening visages in tall striped hats, one of whom looks down upon the scene.

Fascism is the recreation and repetition by Capital of the conditions of its own emergence. When social reproduction starts to fail, Capital returns to, repeats its original crisis.

I don't know what irritates me more-- seeing the pair of blue lines of the grammar check on a Word document every time I use a comma before the word 'but' or the fact that Word insists this is an improper use of the comma. Do I change it to get rid of the blue lines, or stick to my stylistic prefs?

I think what this captures is why cigarettes were sublime, and the ambiguity that term implies between a kind of awe and awfulness. They were the death drive reified between tar-stained fingers.

Worth remembering that just war theory wasn't always put to just purposes, shall we say? For example, in the Salamanca debates over the humanity/fate of Indigenous peoples, Ginés de Sepúlveda explicitly appealed to just war theory as justification for enslavement and domination of the Indies.
