Not a good time for software developers called Al. Time to go back to using Albert, Alfred, Alvin, or whatever is on your birth cert.

If there wasn't a paperclip and some stick tape - then I won't be convinced.

I don't see any issue with that decision.

Pretty much guaranteed that a startup will try it, and some cfo will buy it - because it will look cheaper than doing it inhouse.. and the cto will be pressured to be on the AI bandwagon.

The news of the delays are starting to roll in. The investors are going to be very annoyed when their promised money printing machines start to ask for more and more money before the printing can happen.

Oracle announced datacenter delays are because of power. Expect more and more delays blamed on power and networking issues. Only the vendors who build huge footprints every quarter- will have the supply chain and project management skills to get close to on-time delivery

4GB ram and an Nvidia graphics card. Has to be worth a bazillion or two in the current market.

Too many links go to paywalled content, or ad farmed pages. Not clicking is a trained behavior, because the other end of the link is almost always a time waste

The bank will prefer to make the withdrawals, calculate the interest, make the deposits. The account holder would prefer to make the depoits, calculate the interest, then make the withdrawals. The auditors will want it to be the same in every version of the code. AI won't know it needs to care

I'm unsure if this will solve the ambiguity inherent in statements like : "Update the balance on the bank account, adding the deposits, removing the withdrawals. Calculate the interest rate at 3% and add that to the balance." Order of operations isn't made explicit.

We're two steps away from recreating COBOL ;-) The super polite "please add these two numbers, and put the result over here - and if you have an error then let me know over here" programming language.

I don't think that 'a lot' really conveys the amount of English required to make a technical statement unambiguous. We're going to need a very technical subset of words that are allowed, and words that are excluded as 'vague'. We're going to need to standardize the subset. Give it a name. ;-)

I replaced the marlin firmware on my 3D printer with klipper - and it's been a complete gamechanger. Printing has become fun again. klipper's default configuration is printing so much faster than anything I got from marlin. klipper3d.org #raspberrypi #3dprint

Blaming AI for hacks is the same as blaming the gun for shootings. We need to blame the company and the person using existing laws. There are plenty of existing laws that apply here

Is totally is cleaning up after the dog. It is just a total failure at cleaning up after the human. They probably grew up as participation trophy recipients - they never learned how to get over the finish line.

The age of the filing cabinet will make a return. Retro printers are going to surge again. We are going to need to keep paper copies of the current state of all our online financial and medical accounts - before the surge of AI bots in those institutions delete everything.

Was their accounting engine written by AI ? "We've found two ways to report that the company is profitable - please pick your preference" 1. I will break into the IRS and grant us a $2T refund 2. I will publish the numbers excluding all the big costs that make the business not viable

If Microsoft were in the position that the 'owned' this tech, you can be guaranteed that they wouldn't be having this "lets all be open" position This "choice at every layer" argument is 1000% at odds with what they do when they are out front. This a plea for protection from irrelevance

We're not even measuring actual ROI on the AI investment. 10x faster, 10% more productive - but if that costs 100x, then it's the wrong answer for the business.

Chris Higgins @ch166.bsky.social · 12/09/2026
But is it the right carrot? These questions can't be rushed. You need a carrot that is good enough to buy, but not quite so fantastic that you will feel bad throwing it away in a week.

I think part of the reason behind windows making a bunch of core system stuff out of web pages - is so they can claim that a browser engine is a core part of the operating system and must be included. The unfortunate side effect of not having the user's success as the #1 motivation

It's all a web app, because managing deployed software sucks. You have to support every deployed version ever, for ever - or you break the customer experience. Getting people to upgrade in any decent timeframe is impossible. Put it in a web app - updates are effective immediately (+bugs too)

There have been a few airports recently reporting exactly 200kt winds in their METAR . 200 doesn't seem to be a good data point - is some metar generation software using 200 as a default value to signal an error ? If so - it shouldn't escape into the wild.

Huh? There are many efforts to kill off all the renewable projects, and resurrect coal ? Every solar panel, or wind turbine takes energy to create, but gets its fuel for free Every traditional power generation solution requires continuous investment in fuel production. It's not even a fair fight

That seems a little extreme - all existing FOD on the runway will be blown away - you'll just have to deal with the new FOD on the runway.

The metal in your car has likely been melted a few times. Same for all the plastics around you - and any glass you touch. Why pick on solder ? Show us on this circuit board, where the bad solder hurt you.

"AI reduces the cost of building and increases the value of judgment" It's too soon to understand if the output from AI is reducing the long term costs of software development. Speed of code creation does not map to quality. There is lots of evidence of AI software quality problems

Only because the cat doesn't carry a credit card. So the employees at the vet need to know which member of the cats staff is responsible for payment. It looks bad if they have to ask the cat every time.
