I recently discussed AI use for medical theses with military medicine residents. My answer to “Should we use it?” was yes—with four guiding principles: verify claims, protect data, disclose AI use, and take responsibility for the final work. (4/4)

🧠 Generative AI offers considerable potential as a “co-scientist” (Gottweis et al., Nature, 2026) or through human–AI “co-intelligence” (Ong et al., Lancet Digital Health, 2026). (2/4) 🔗 Gottweis et al: doi.org/10.1038/s415... 🔗 Ong et al: doi.org/10.1016/j.la...

Key findings: ⚡ Individuals with AN showed reduced detection of gut signals despite preserved neural and physiological responses. ✅ Gastric stimulation increased hunger in AN. ✅ Altered gut perception predicted relapse risk and symptom severity 6 months after discharge. (4/6)

These findings establish IAF not only as a stable individual trait, but also as a trainable neural property that shapes the temporal dynamics of attention. 6/7

Notably: Mediation analyses revealed a causal chain—neurofeedback increased IAF, which sped up α-ERD dynamics, ultimately leading to faster behavioral responses. 5/7

𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬: ✅ Participants who successfully increased their IAF (“learners”) showed faster reaction times and greater response efficiency on the Attention Network Test. ⚡ They also exhibited shorter α-ERD latencies, reflecting faster allocation of cognitive resources. 4/7

We tested the model with self-report measures in people with vs. without prior EHS. Cases (n=51) reported lower interoceptive body awareness but no difference in global motivational traits versus controls (n=43) 4/6
100
Charles Verdonk @ch-verdonk.bsky.social · 19/10/2025
We propose a cognitive model in which EHS arises from a disturbed cost–benefit trade-off during prolonged exertion: excessive motivation overvalues performance benefits, while low interoceptive awareness undervalues bodily costs (see figure) 3/6
100
Charles Verdonk @ch-verdonk.bsky.social · 19/10/2025
EHS is classically described as a purely physiological failure - heat gain exceeds heat loss (see figure) - but physiological models alone cannot fully explain or predict who develops EHS 2/6
