August's #ADozenDiscoveries is this map of the Wadi deir el-Nakhlah (BER.MAP.01), marking the tombs of Deir el-Bersha. Drawn by George Willoughby-Fraser (1866-1923) in 1892 for @theees.bsky.social, its accuracy was confirmed in the early 2000s. 🗺️ More on Facebook/Instagram!

My last visit to the wonderfully preserved Ptolemaic temple of Edfu was 20 years ago! Not much has changed at the temple, but i certainly understood more of what i was seeing this time around 🫣😂

Having never visited El Kab before, i was really impressed! Particularly interested in the graffiti (ancient to modern) seen across the wadi temples and tombs nearer the settlement. Clearly this has been an important place to visit for millennia and we’re just the latest in that tradition!

The tour continued with the beautiful temple of Seti I at Abydos yesterday. The reliefs here are among the best in Egypt, and @theees.bsky.social have some extraordinary archive images of them dating to the 1920/30s.

Of course, no visit to Middle Egypt is complete without a trip to Amarna - ancient Akhetaten, founded by Akhenaten. As well as the royal city, we also stopped by the north and south tombs and the royal wadi, as well as one of the boundary stela surrounding the city.

After Beni Hasan, we made the short journey to Tuna el Gebel on the west bank travelling from the Middle Kingdom to the Graeco-Roman Period in about one hour! Here we saw the catacombs of mummified ibis and the tomb chapel of Petosiris 😍

This morning we have visited the 4th Dynasty pyramid of Meidum from our first stop at Beni Suef. We were the only group on site today with a cooling breeze to blow the dust off those that scrambled into mastaba 17 to the north of the pyramid 😬

Yesterday was a chance to lecture about the life and legacy of Amelia Edwards and the founding of @theees.bsky.social as we set off ‘A Thousand Miles Up the Nile’. There is no better way to begin a Nile journey than to imagine how other travellers did over a century ago!
