Next time a doctor asks for permission to use AI, here's a pretty solid case for why you should say no: news.northeastern.edu/2024/12/05/a...

How will AI scribes affect the quality of health care?
Sari Altschuler, a professor of English, argues that usage of AI scribes for note-taking can negatively affect the quality of care.

It's not just whether they check the AI output though. Check out @sarialtschuler.bsky.social's work on this: news.northeastern.edu/2024/12/05/a.... At my last dr appt, I offered to send her Sari's Lancet article to explain why I was saying no 😉

If there is a short clip of this remark from this judge, I think it could actually capture all of American politics in the past 2 years in what, 5 seconds?

New research yet again confirming that roughly 70% of Americans do not want whitewashed, censored history. Never forget that distorting history to make it more "patriotic" is a fringe position. Inclusivity and complexity isn't. wilkeningconsulting.com/censorship-2...

Also--the structure worked very well & I recommend it to others! We had 16 pre-circulated papers by scholars at all career stages on 5 panels; speakers had 5 min to give context, and commentators had 10 min. We invited public historians to attend. 3 institutions co-funded to cover travel.

Those lines were replaced with "The women, many of whom came from prominent and politically connected families, demanded to be treated as political prisoners." Chilling but unsurprising to see erasure of both the brutal govt treatment of protestors & how this shifted public opinion.

Cassandra Good @cgoodhistorian.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
The original version read: "While imprisoned, the women were beaten and force fed when they went on hunger strikes. The ensuing publicity changed public and Congressional opinion.”

the NEH is a ghost of an organization. the NEA's budget is $29 million. I'm not saying this to be pissy, but simply to say that when we rebuild - and we will rebuild - I expect solidarity from my STEM colleagues as we robustly expand research in the arts and humanities as well.

It's esp important for male academics to learn more about how problematic the Title IX process is and how poorly universities treat survivors. I helped organize a conference panel on this topic in 2022. The room was full--of women. Two men came. This isn't a women's issue, it's a human issue.

The real solution is collective, not individual: "Based on her study of more than 150 tribal societies, she identified what makes a society or culture “rape prone,” “rape free,” or something between the two.... in rape-free cultures, women have far more authority, status, safety, and freedom."

I have long wondered why universities don't have a (non-profit) neutral 3rd-party review system for Title IX proceedings. As it stands, the focus of the Title IX process is the university protecting itself, not students. Or does a system like this exist in some places?

The 20 minutes it took to catch her were some of the scariest of my life. I’m still shaken. She ran so far, so fast that her paws were bleeding. And yet—the kindness & care of strangers gives me hope. I’m so grateful that people took the time to help a scared pup. /

My friend & her son ran after Blossom for around 2 miles. Cars stopped & people got out to try to catch her. Marymount students & a cleaning crew leaving a house tried. A local HVAC technician drove after her for a mile & finally cornered her w the help of a woman with a leash & an older couple.

Yet when gender historians argue that female friends & family of politicians in early America had political influence & power, many (esp political) historians want more. Prove it, they say. Show us a specific piece of legislation or a written record tying a woman to a political decision. /2
