Here's a few more tidbits: 1. Most people (72.1%) slept regularly. Interestingly, the average regular sleep lasted 6.73 hours. That’s slightly less than the recommended 7-hour minimum.

For my first freelance gig I covered this eye-opening study on sleep by for @science.org. What caught my eye was how it challenged the conventional wisdom. The idea that catching up on sleep right away may be better than waiting for the weekend is something I thought people might want to know.

Can extra snoozing reverse the health hazards of a bad night’s sleep?
Catching more z’s the day after a shortened slumber appears to reduce risk of early death

Thank you Nanthia. This article sparked thoughts!! Thoughts of Santiago Ramon y Cajal and how the neuron theory - the main guide to understanding how the brain works - rests firmly on his “cross-species” evidence. Hope that helps. 🙏🙏🙏

Bravo Dr. Gounder! Your TV spot and Substack article offer the public valuable lessons in this type of research and news. 👏👏👏 Scientists and their institutes’ writers also play a big role in the news when they summarize studies in press releases. Many news stories simply repeat the spin! 🙏🙏🙏

How clever in a “Huh! Why-didn’t-others-try-this?” kind of way! Life is an endless dance between genes and environment. Most lifespan estimates are based on studies of people who lived in more dangerous times. So, these researchers found a new way to follow the role of both partners in any time. 👏👏👏

Genetics play a larger part in lifespan than previously thought
A person’s lifespan may be up to 55% heritable, according to new research.

Of all the news stories that covered this study, this one does the best job of helping the reader understand how much thought and work went into this very clever and innovative project. 🙏 #Science #Alzhiemer's #medicine #DataMining

The back story to this study is pretty interesting! As described in this news article, it all started with one set of experiments in one study on the potential role of a gene-repressing protein in Alzheimer's (see threads below). 🙏 #Science #Alzhiemer's #medicine #YeahScience

Hmm...in 2025, 3 promising, pre-clinical Alzheimer's reversal studies were published in high profile journals. Yet this one does not appear to have made as much news as the others (see threads below). Was it a timing thing, i.e. posted 2 days before Christmas? Or was it just not as easy to cover?

Alzheimer’s disease could be reversed by restoring brain balance, study suggests
A new method of reversing Alzheimer's shows promise in an animal study, as researchers at University Hospitals restore brain energy molecule NAD+.

This study's story is even more interesting and trickier to tell than that told by the free news articles that covered it. Of those, NBC News' story does the best at addressing some of the trickiness with helpful quotes from a well-matched expert in the field.

More follow-up points 1. It appears that the aging spin on this study was generated by the researchers' university press release.

Just to follow up, this study generated at least 12 news stories. The one by Aamir Khollam of Interesting Engineering probably provided the most accurate angle. Hope this helps! 🙏

Hmm...it's hard to know what's more interesting here: the results of the study covered by this and other news stories or that it's covered as aging research when no aging experiments were conducted, nor were the words "age" or "aging" mentioned in the paper that describes the results. 😉
