That's something I could see myself doing. A couple times. Then going, "Wait, they did this a lot, maybe it was on purpose?"

How much would you shell out to get him to stop?

Indeed. And in winter in the mountains you don't even need to be a complete idiot to get in serious trouble. I know I've done a few things that I've looked back on and gone, "Well that was close," even after going over the risks.

I was going to give a quick warning about being careful with winter hikes but looking at your profile I'm guessing you don't need it. :-) Good luck finding someplace.

I'm a big fan of the Adirondacks and Vermont. Both have plenty of places you can go without a guide but I do recommend trail guides. And places in town that you can get close to nature. Are you looking at doing winter hiking?

Which means there’s a real difference between reading a book you have, buying a new copy of a book, and going to an event by someone. And, for those with the ability, giving them new contracts that give them some sort of authority (either literal or fandom).

Fair point. Anyone that follows things know but there are a lot of people that don’t. This would be a one shot kind of thing too since he’s unlikely to do other interviews afterwards. Although, didn’t Swam do an interview like this with him?

I don't think the result would actually be news either. Everyone knows he doesn't know how things work. Should it be disqualifying? Would it get under his skin? Yes. But him not knowing wouldn't be any more news than a bear getting into garbage. Good for a laugh or a head shake and move on.

It took being a parent for me to realize some of the annoying things I do. “This thing my kids do is really annoying. Where did they get that fro……oh, oh no.”

I was actually thinking of the foodraiser. I’ll betting you could put $13k in food to good use.

I bet @gregdoucette.bsky.social could spend that much in food stamps a month but I don’t know anyone else who can.

That’s dedication to voting. If you haven’t already I would talk with someone to make sure you can push off what the advanced directive says. Since it’s a legal document I’m not sure how flexible it is and don’t want more frustration for you in what would be a hard time already.

Building character as a kid is important and going through hard things, even very hard things, with caring adults to help is a big part of that. The rub is, caring adults don't force kids to go through hard things. There are other ways to start and hard things will come along on their own.

I'm not surprised. Any time you give a role power you're also attracting people who want to abuse that power to the role.

And so many IT staff that dealt with this don't have accounts with Crowdstrike so I'm not even sure who in our org got this.

cfradenburg.bsky.social @cfradenburg.bsky.social · 24/07/2024
My first reaction was that it had to be a scam because the cost for any org that dealt with this is so far over $10 that there's no way someone could think this is anyone other than insulting.

Is that based on places like Russia that have a reputation for suppressing speech or also places that don't have that reputation? I wouldn't be surprised if the trajectory is the same, just at different rates.

The chance of failure of tech is too high for me to rely on as my sole map. If a paper map falls in a river it should still be at least mostly readable. That being said, if you study the trail ahead of time and know how to get out without any map (even mental) any map is good enough.

Thank you, I wasn't really sure. I've been saying for a while that Trump isn't really the problem, he's just serving his crowd and if he doesn't live up to their expectations he loses them.

Affordable housing isn't only for the poor. We live in a very expensive area and if we hadn't bought a while ago we would need affordable housing to buy something now because prices are crazy. Our house was appraised for almost twice was we paid ten years ago.

I mean, people will do that. But is it more than would go if foot/bike/public transportation is more convenient? In most cases probably not, especially if there's convenient edge-of-city parking with an easy way to travel the last bit.

cfradenburg.bsky.social @cfradenburg.bsky.social · 05/07/2024
Since cars allow us to travel further it increases the customer base which theoretically results in more customers. However, making it so people that are within 10-15 minute bike ride can get there easily and safely will probably help more than drawing in people a 30 minute drive out in most places.

Back when people started posting the Native name for land where pictures were taken and it bugged me but I couldn’t figure out why. Then someone I had followed for a while did it but it didn’t bother me and it clicked. I knew she cared. The rest I was assuming, right or wrong, wanted attention.

I miss the days of being able to talk things out with my wife without hearing, “Dad, let me talk for five minutes without breathing,” or, “Can I watch Bluey? Can I watch Bluey? Can I watch Bluey?” Fortunately the days of high pitch screaming just for the heck of it seems to have ended.

Any chance these would fall under the parody exemption? There’s a lot of your own creativity off your own in them and some do more than glance towards parody but I don’t know the ins and outs enough to know if that would apply.

I’m a DBA and I’ve used Linux in the past but I still hesitate to go that route because I don’t want to spend my energy getting my computer to work. But I also don’t want to spend energy getting my computer not to monitor me so it may be the lesser of two evils.

How many support personnel in the military can do most of their work from home though? IT (when we're not dealing with hardware), accountants, etc. I work for a hospital and a lot of our staff do need to be physically present all the time, some none of the time, and some only occasionally.

Life has gotten busy so I’ve stopped reading to our older two but we want to get back into it. The younger two still get books every night and the older two listen to audio books and read themselves. Which isn’t quite the same but we’re working on it.

I’ve never liked the, “Do as I say, not as I do,” definition of a hypocrite. There are things I do and opinions I have about people that I’m not proud of. A hypocrite is someone who says it’s okay for me but not for you.

Plan plenty of extra time because there are going to be neat things to look at and spend time on. Being able to relax and give your kid that time instead of stressing to get to the next thing helps a lot. On the flip side, bring extra entertainment in case they aren't into it that day.

There's a lot of people that are absolutish instead of absolutist about free speech. Which, honestly, is probably everyone because everyone has speech they think shouldn't be allowed, like threats, emotional abuse, etc.

That whole, "I can see how the crap they've been through is affecting their behavior but it's still not okay," is a tough but important one. The context helps figure out how to address it, it doesn't mean we should excuse it.
