Saint Catherine prays, an angel w/ a sword appears, the wheel bursts into flames, and the landscape is beautiful. Because it was painted in 1515 by Joachim Patinir, master of landscape, who died OTD in 1524.

Monday of the Twenty-seventh Week in Ordinary Time Six minutes ago I received a notification from Etsy that a medal of St. Ambrose that I ordered will arrive today. (This is not to say that such notification was useful at all. It will arrive whether I expect it or not.)

Neat. We used to work with a local optogenetics company as a client in our senior-design course in biomedical engineering. I also did an editing job on an optogenetics proposal two summers ago.

Oh this wasn’t meant to be snide or critical. After all, it is indeed the memorial of St. Francis even if that isn’t the Mass today in most places! (And it is for us! Just arrived home from it, in fact.)

In most of the Church today is the memorial of St. Francis but liturgically superseded by the Twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time. In parishes dedicated to Francis — like my family's — and in Franciscan communities it's the solemnity of St. Francis — in the Franciscan Jubilee Year! 🕊️ #Francis800

My own 📸 of a Bede window: St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, Ann Arbor, 25 May 2024 — feast of St. Bede En route to my car from the farmers market, on a whim I tried the door to sit by the Bede window for a bit. It was locked but a volunteer for the daily breakfast program saw me and let me in. ❤️

This Zurburan is in the collection of the art museum in Milwaukee. Startles me every time, so mysterious. Mysterious also was St. Francis’s embrace of “Sister Death,” which we remember tonight, October 3: The Transitus, when he passed through death to life.

Pope Leo's address yesterday to a delegation from the Lutheran World Federation is good. I sent it to my pope-loving Lutheran aunt with a comment that opening with that passage from Second Corinthians was perfect. She reminded me that in fact my grandfather (her father) began his sermons with it. ❤️

Today concludes a four-day stretch that I like to call Angeltide — between the feast days of the archangels (September 29) and the guardian angels (October 2) By my reckoning this period is the beginning of the autumn spooky season — concluding at the treble solo at King's College on Christmas Eve
