Two stars in this #NASAWebb image are responsible for the horizontal jets. Known as Herbig-Haro 797, they are ingesting gas and dust—and periodically sending out two-sided jets. They’ll form over thousands of years. Credit: ESA, NASA, CSA.
In the lower half is a narrow, horizontal cloud of gas and dust that stretches from edge to edge. It is largely pink at left and a mix of greens, oranges and reds at right. Two actively forming stars known as Herbig-Haro 797 are hidden on the right side, within the pinched waist of an orange section. A bright star with long diffraction spikes lies along the top right edge, and a few smaller stars are spread around. The background is covered in a thin blue haze.

Paul Dirac (1902, discovered the relativistic equation for fermion wave functions), Ernest Lawrence (1901, invented the cyclotron), and Roger Penrose (1931, developed global view of spacetime and much of what we know about spacetime singularities) were all born #OTD. Pretty good day for physics. 🧪 ⚛️
A black and white photo of Paul Dirac in his early 20s. He is looking directly at the camera, and while not smiling he does look pleased. Dirac is wearing a dark jacket and white collared shirt. His tie sports a stairstep strip pattern. Dirac has a thin mustache.A black and white photo of Ernest Lawrence working on part of his cyclotron. Despite working in the lab he is wearing a pinstripe suit with a double-breasted jacket -- a very formal affair by today's standards, totally lab-to-evening wear. There is a white handkerchief in the breast pocket of his jacket. Lawrence his looking away from the camera, at the apparatus that he is working on. He is wearing glasses and his hair is slicked back. The apparatus appears to be two large cylinders (probably supporting magnets) with machinery situated between them.A color photo of Roger Penrose, presumably from the late 60s or early 70s based on the butterfly collar of his light green shirt. He is also wearing a dark sport coat. His head is tilted slightly, looking at the camera. There are sun-dappled tree branches and foliage in the background.

Just looked up his mass-energy equivalence paper. It's half a page long!
Full text of "The Equivalence of Mass and Energy" by Kenneth T. Bainbridge, published as a letter to the editor, half a page long, in Physical Review, vol. 44, p. 123 (July 15, 1933). He describes tests of mass-energy equivalence in the reactions Li7 + p -> 2alpha and Li6 + H2 -> 2alpha, using his new mass-spectrometer measurements of the masses of the lithium isotopes. For the first reaction he finds good agreement. For the second he finds that the "measured mass change does not agree satisfactorily", but suggests that this may be due to an inaccurate measurement of the alpha particles' energies in the work he cites.

Physicist Kenneth Bainbridge was born #OTD in 1904. He used mass spectrometetry to verify Einstein’s mass-energy equivalence, built Harvard’s cyclotron, and directed the Manhattan Project’s Trinity Test. After that first atomic blast, he said to Oppenheimer “Now we are all sons of bitches.”

🔭 Messier 6 Image Credit & Copyright: Xinran Li apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap25071...
The sixth object in Charles Messier's famous catalog of things which are not comets, Messier 6 is a galactic or open star cluster. A gathering of 100 stars or so, all around 100 million years young, M6 lies some 1,600 light-years away toward the central Milky Way in the constellation Scorpius. Also cataloged as NGC 6405, the pretty star cluster's outline suggests its popular moniker, the Butterfly Cluster. Surrounded by diffuse reddish emission from the region's hydrogen gas the cluster's mostly hot and therefore blue stars are near the center of this colorful cosmic snapshot. But the brightest cluster member is a cool K-type giant star. Designated BM Scorpii it shines with a yellow-orange hue, seen near the end of one of the butterfly's antennae. This telescopic field of view spans nearly 2 Full Moons on the sky. That's 25 light-years at the estimated distance of Messier 6.

Hubble dug up a galactic time capsule! 🕰️ Globular clusters such as NGC 1786 seen here are spherical collections of tightly-bound stars. They are very stable and long-lived, preserving stars from the earliest stages of a galaxy’s formation. Read more 👉 esahubble.org/images/potw2... 🔭 🧪
A cluster of stars in space. It’s bright in the centre, where the stars are densely packed together in the cluster’s core, and grows dimmer and more diffuse out to the edges, as the stars give way to the dark background of space. A few orange stars are spread across the cluster, but most are pale, bluish-white points of light. Three large stars with cross-shaped spikes around them lie between us and the cluster.

A high-resolution color image of Mars with the small, dark, potato shaped satellite Phobos, seen in sharp contrast as it passes over the massive volcano Olympus Mons. Phobos appears irregular and shadowed against the softly rust colored Martian surface. In the distance, two other volcanic features Ascraeus Mons (upper right) and the flatter Alba Mons (upper left) are visible. Wisps of light clouds and the blackness of space frame the planet’s curved horizon.

Springer Nature--pioneering the new world of science where facts can be made up and citations generated to support them
Springer Nature book on machine learning is full of made-up citations

Would you pay $169 for an introductory ebook on machine learning with citations that appear to be made up?

If not, you might want to pass on purchasing Mastering Machine Learning: From Basics to Advanced, published by Springer Nature in April.

Based on a tip from a reader, we checked 18 of the 46 citations in the book. Two-thirds of them either did not exist or had substantial errors. And three researchers cited in the book confirmed the works they supposedly authored were fake or the citation contained substantial errors.

Note that errors on the color measurement are plotted, but are approximately the size of the plot points. 3I/ATLAS shows a moderately red spectral slope similar to 1I/‘Oumuamua and 2I/Borisov.
