Today I used this image to talk about the pitfalls of AI with my intro class, and they all seemed to Get It. Fingers crossed that this understanding manifests in their upcoming essays.

Really love that when I open any page on my course Canvas sites, Google Lens offers to take over and complete the homework with AI. I'm sure none of my students will be tempted. Teaching in 2025 is a sisyphean endeavor. Sigh.

The nice thing about recording my lectures is that when I start to doubt how clear I was while explaining a concept (due to midterm grading), I can go right to the tape and prove, yeah, I actually I did explain that thing in quite specific detail.

Turned down reviewing for the NEH today.

However, I understand that the NEH will be implementing some recent Executive Orders and thus limiting the kinds of research that can be funded, including prohibiting funding those projects which relate to gender, diversity, equity, inclusion, accessibility, or environmental justice. I'm afraid that I cannot participate as a reviewer under these constraints, which I find to be antithetical to both academic freedom and historical praxis. I hope that I will be able to serve in the future, when these restrictions are no longer inhibiting the mission of the NEH and the scholarship it supports.
