The fog reminds me of when I used to have dreams. I remember walking through the lamp-lit mist from my first apartment to get my mail at night. The early internet was connecting us, not separating us. I listened to tracker music in ModPlug on the white finger-hole computer speakers. One that […]

@fluffy But I do. I remember the original packaging for Goldfish, which showed a school of Goldfish crackers swimming in one direction, and one with a face drawn on rebelliously turning to swim in the opposite direction. And later, the package design changed so that the Goldfish with the face […]

@fluffy I'm thinking of the Electric Monk from Dirk Gently. A machine that believes stuff for you. That's the whole selling point of these things. Why reach your own conclusions about the truth or wisdom of any particular thing when you can just get a device to be really certain about it for […]

Life is too fast for me, and all my attempts to compensate for it backfire. It stops me from doing lots of things, and I was beginning to think I would not escape the poetic tragedy that it would prevent from me even seeing this one film before it left theaters. But I finally did, and it sure […]

[spoilers for Werewolf (1995)] @fluffy I looked up the review by my friend who literally has devoted most of his life to watching and reviewing films and werewolf films in particular. In it, he says that the uncut version runs 22 minutes longer and that he has no interest in seeing it to find […]

This battery pack that charges at home overnight and jumpstarts a car by itself has got to be my best investment of the decade. I only have to spend a few minutes berating myself for my mistakes instead of days on end struggling to ask someone for help.

Hoping to hasten the recovery of my shoulder has complicated my relationship with showers even further. Hot water on my back is a great relief, but the work of washing and drying myself is a bit more than I think my arms should be doing.

My left shoulder spontaneously went all enfuckened this week. I've been trying to rest it but I have a suspicion that I am out of warranty and my wing is just going to hurt forever now.

I have to suppose other people can be told "be ready for a phone call, we will not tell you when, we will give you a time frame and then let it run out so it could be at any time indefinitely, but you must answer that call and immediately commit to an exact schedule months away" without it […]

@fluffy 11 wide by 9 tall, that sounds like what you need are file boxes from an office store. The corrugated cardboard ones could be adequate for a reasonable price and you could easily affix a few together on a base to the desired length.

My decade in phones. I probably could have gotten years more out of the S9 just waiting for it to break or even trying to glue it back together myself, but better to have it sorted.
Photo of three phones. Samsung Transform Ultra: Front and back slide apart (for physical keyboard). Replaced battery just before made obsolete by network. Samsung Galaxy S9: Front and back are not _supposed_ to come apart (but have, because they are rounded shells with no sides to hold them together). Samsung Galaxy A16: All sides are actually flat. A bit bigger than the pockets of my favorite jeans.

Okay A-Best, I know normal can't be expected to imagine that a phone call in the middle of the day could wake someone up or why that could be counterproductive, but if I already knew for sure when I wanted to try again I would have selected "reschedule" instead of "cancel" so I don't know what a […]

So I got a puzzle in my head, because it feels better to be thinking about abstract problems than real problems, and it seemed suited to ES1, so I spent time making it, even though it has literally no audience. The back of my phone is coming off, in a way it is not supposed to. It still works, but I feel like I shouldn't carry it around letting lint get into the sides. Probably the battery is bloating, but now they make these things so you can't just change the battery or even pay someone to do so […]

To learn that the novel "Three Bags Full" ("Glennkill") by Leonie Swann is being turned into a movie "The Sheep Detectives" gives me very mixed feelings. It's being marketed like a comedy, but if you know where the story goes I'm not sure they can handle it as gently. The thing is, a long time […]

Matt Rose refers to emoticons as "analog emoji", presumably because they're older than emoji. Even setting aside that both are technically digital, is that really an appropriate analogy? It seems backwards to me. A digital time is made of characters I can type, like 4:38. Whereas an analog clock […]

[spoilers for Cursed Words] About to end this muppet's whole career.
Screenshot from an endgame. The final boss, the host Michael who looks like a fugitive from Sesame Street, is down to 2948 out of 38204. My player character Nina Nix is a happy ghost puppet gal who reminds me of friends. The stickers include strong "face card" synergies and a rare stamp that reliably supplies consumable shiny question marks. The grid contains no actual letters.

Playing a lot of word games makes one aware of odd things like mandatory plurals: As the dictionaries have it, there is no such thing as one sud, nor can you give an alm. You can, however, have a jink at any altitude.

Sometimes a meme gets your head and you gotta draw it from scratch.
Cartoon of a businesslike human woman entering a kitchen and finding that a pink puppy-girl has overturned the trash bin and is happily eating garbage. The trash is labeled "gendered language". The human is labeled "regular society slowly and painstakingly getting a few words like 'actor' to include women". The dog girl is labeled "online trans girls employing constructions like 'dragoness' and 'administratrix' to validate ourselves".
