That checks out. I honestly recognized it immediately.

I get spam sometimes, but I haven't been approached with any scams for my blog yet.

This game is tremendously inspirational to me personally, as a testament to what a solo developer can do. It really captures the Ocarina of Time style atmosphere, but it's also very much doing its own thing (thank hell!).

I played chapter 1 a while back and I've been floored by it! I haven't gotten to play chapter 2 yet, and this dev deserves so much more attention and money than they're currently getting (why did you release chapter 2 for free? why is the game so cheap!?)

I think the call to cut budgets is sensible, but I can't imagine it ever happening. That's the only moat big companies have!

I've updated my fighting game motion input trainer with indicators for the direction you're charging, and a move list! I've also added an Easter egg (a Geese egg?) for anyone trying out weird stuff. celialicious.itch.io/wave-motion-...

We want players to feel confident in their ability to engage with the systems without reloading over and over, or simply memorizing the level layout. In other words, we want to: Keep players solving.

Celialicious @celialicious.bsky.social · 06/09/2026
That's a good point too. You brought it up in the video, and there's big potential for a stealth roguelike (or just basic procedural generation/randomization). I think the "consequences" angle is a cute gimmick, but I don't think it's a real solution. We want players to build competency.

Huh. Not perfect, but it makes sense for what I have out there. lol at it calling those terms "complex industry terms". I mean, they kinda have complex implications, but it's funny to say "fun" is complex.

If we want stealth to be more forgiving, then we could probably diegetize quickloading in some way (make it into a mechanic with limits) instead of just allowing free checkpoint creation at any time. This could mean a limited resource, or I've proposed prince of persia style time rewinding.

Celialicious @celialicious.bsky.social · 05/09/2026
In MGS Hard/Euro Extreme mode, there's a wide space between suspicion and alert, and set checkpoints, so playing stealthy without save states comes naturally on those difficulties. It's faster to play stealthy & well than the alternatives. I think this represents a strong direction for the genre.

Celialicious @celialicious.bsky.social · 05/09/2026
If people want to play stealthy, then getting detected means either quickloading, or playing out a whole alert sequence, running away, and hiding until the alert passes. One takes significantly less time, and alerts aren't really fun, except in Monaco, where they're more fun than stealth.

Celialicious @celialicious.bsky.social · 05/09/2026
I think that the problem of save-scumming is a massive one for the stealth genre in particular (It's a problem with any game that allows it, but stealth games feature save states SO OFTEN), because stealth games have this very thin line between evasion and detection, which encourages redoing.

Celialicious @celialicious.bsky.social · 05/09/2026
I recognize that. I don't think you have to present all of the major points at the start, you can number them and let people discover them as they watch. I think it's just good so that people don't have to retroactively figure out your point as you make it.

Celialicious @celialicious.bsky.social · 05/09/2026
I think with a provocative title like that, you should try to establish your thesis early on (good advice for any essay, but especially here). What exactly are the flaws of the stealth genre, and why are they flaws? Then go into what makes those things flaws.
100
Celialicious @celialicious.bsky.social · 05/09/2026
This is well argued! I'm impressed to see good work from a small creator! I think you have a few oversights (save states make checkpoints, the game could just have its own checkpoints), but your points are fundamentally solid.

You're taking this on a tangent. I don't even know what game you're talking about.

My objection is that I'm not wasting my time on the industry or industry-brained devs. I'm not wasting my time by teaching people who are looking to learn. I never accused you of doing anything wrong.

Celialicious @celialicious.bsky.social · 02/09/2026
You know I do more than just the course. I get plenty of "real devs" in my course. I'm not an entryist, I'm not trying to get into the industry. I can't change the material conditions of the industry, just the knowledgebase, and ideally that filters out to everyone.
100
Celialicious @celialicious.bsky.social · 02/09/2026
I spread knowledge everywhere. I do work with indies. Many people in the courses I teach are indie. Most of what I've been doing lately is making connections with indie game devs & collectives offline. I'm not a corporate shill.

And when people are allowed to have longer careers, you see they have a stronger sense of game design, like Sakurai, like Mark Rosewater And then Boghog tells me I'm wasting my time trying to help people out, because their values are wrong, and spreading knowledge just helps bad devs make bad games

So, my whole thing is trying to increase game design literacy across the board, and my thesis on that is that institutional knowledge hasn't been built up or transferred because of the constant rolling layoffs. Y'know, material conditions.

I take the perspective that ideally, games should keep the player solving. I enjoy a good speedrun strat tho, if it's tricky and unexpected, or it skips something boring. I think the impact of cheese is proportional to its affordance.

Someone in my discord pointed out that this is an "amazing opportunity to go on a new grift for him", and I pointed out he's on Piers Morgan, indicating he's still in the game.

My mom and I have a saying, "Take me seriously, not personally". And my gf likes to say, "video games are modern day religion". The issue is that people take their video game fandom personally, and they are looking for people to justify their tastes, and they feel attacked by people who disagree.

He *wasn't* behind the wheel of any creative decisions on 2XKO. He wasn't the director, nor the lead designer. Dude, Pat has similar taste in fighting games to Woolie, and a lot of other people. Was 2XKO the best considered as a game design and as a product? Maybe not. But that's not Pat's fault.

the reaction to the patrick miller 2XKO article is basically why no devs will ever be honest about their process in public and nor should they be. gamers can’t be fucking normal

The thing I really wanna say is stop looking for the savior of fighting games to justify you playing them. Maybe there isn't a fighting game for you and that's ok. You can go make it or maybe go play something else which is ok too. Just don't be an energy vampire.

It comes from a sincere place, but I think it's better to channel that more authentically than just outrage and assumed shared values. The assumption of automatic shared values is such a trap for criticism, because you end up preaching to the choir, which I think this article does.

I've similarly learned to temper my Id over time and write with less Vitriol™ than I used to, and I think my writing has improved a lot for it, because I think the "Gamer Spirit of Vitriol™" is kind of a dead-end as an analytical lens.

It tends to get applied to anyone who is a Marxist-Leninist or downstream of that ideology. More broadly, it gets applied to anyone who is an apologist for communist regimes in general. It's kind of unfair, given how much blood the US/Western Hegemony has on its hands.

In real terms: Tankies are apologists for the authoritarian actions of the USSR and China, named for UK Communists who basically went, "Yeah, the USSR was right to crush the Hungarian uprising with tanks." In modern times, it tends to get more associated with the Tiananman Square incident.

This realization also freed me from, "Hey, if our game is so skill-less, why don't you beat me at it?" And then I waste a few days beating them at it.

I had this realization with Smash Bros Brawl. The fact you're competing against other people means that it will always be hard to win, the outcome will just be about "squeezing water from a stone" more than mastering a set of different skills.
