LMAO, GOT YOUR ASS! I've been speculating on good ways to do this for 2d FGs for ages. Soul Calibur has a version of it. Smash just has a really cool mechanical tension between combo extender vs finisher, due to ringouts. KI has a version of this, but it's very digital, not very analog.

Another thing that would help would be Smash style DI. I'd haaaaate this, I don't want to do this but oh god does it solve so many problems at once. You give the hit player a degree of control AND a new way for combos to drop? It doesn't have to be DI, it could be like Melty Blood style "mash to reduce", but it tries to shake you out like banging a pinball machine or something. Like it hurts my pride so much to go "ugh, Smash might have been right."
