Every day, around 1 pm, Persie decides that it's time for love. She crawls into my arms, turns over, and I hold her like a baby while she marks my face and purrs her little heart out. She's just my best friend and companion. What did we do to deserve cats?

This little long-haired mackerel tabby cat is called Apollo. He's sitting in the lamplight in front of a stack of books (the books I've read this year so far). Local Author Jenn Givhan is writing a book called The Sleeping Sisters. The blurb on the flyer says that it's "drawing on the unresolved West Mesa Murders, the novel is grounded in Albuquerque with intelligence, specificity, and deep respect for place. A brilliant book!" by Alisa Valdes.

These are my babies: Luna, Apollo, and Persephone (called Persie.) Read the alt text and I'll tell you all about them!

This is a picture of Luna and me during an impromptu snuggle session several weeks ago. She's a little black cat with one green eye and one gold eye. The large bald spot on her neck is now nearly grown back! She's been suffering from a severe allergy spike for months. Today is her first day without a cone in awhile, and she's so, so happy.

This is a picture of a longhair mackerel tabby (kind of blonde, kind of gray) floofy boy named Apollo. He has a truly magnificent tail, which he's asleep on his bed, hugging it in this picture. He is definitely my wife's cat, but he's nice enough to let me reach over and give him scritchies. He's only three years old now, but he's so handsome. He's the only boy I've ever loved.

This picture is of Persephone, an absolutely gorgeous calico tabby with slightly chimeric features, green eyes, white-sock paws and a white tip on her tail (not pictured). She's lying on a thing we bought to help her eat her treats more slowly -- but the cats all decided it was a bed. She's immensely clever, and sweet, HUNGRY AS HELL and not afraid to cut a bitch if the moment arises (the vet). Persie is absolutely, completely my girl. Lately she's begun snuggling with my wife too, much to her surprise, and nothing gives my heart more joy.

My poor Luna scratched her sutures open, so now she gets to wear a cone AND a onesie. I'm sure she thinks we're punishing her. But even as I write this, she's climbing into my arms, wanting comfort.* *I sent this to my friend, who said "she's the cutest little flashlight!" and this is correct.

It's hard enough keeping my shit straight with the world being what it is right now, but my precious Luna, y'all. She's been having the world's worst allergy attack, and nothing we do helps. Now the vet is concerned that something entirely different is wrong. My heart can't take this.

The Queen, the GOAT, the allergy-prone beauty, this is Luna when she discovered our new multimedia cabinet for our vinyl. She's a little black cat with a dusting of white on her chest, with one gold eye and one green eye, and she's sitting primly, tucked in a shelf where vinyl records should go. She remains perfect.

This little fluffmuffin is Apollo. He's a good boy, despite the fact that we have only truly confirmed the presence of one brain cell. This is his favorite spot to sit, on my shrine to the Greek god Apollo, his namesake. I'd like to think the god (and the cat) think this behavior is funny and endearing.

He's a little long-haired cat with green eyes, mackerel tabby markings, and a white ruff and paws, with the world's most innocent himbo face. Incidentally, he's sleeping on my feet as I write this.

You want the cute? You can't handle the cute!

This calico beauty is named Persephone, but she only really answers to Persie. She's a shorthair calico tabby with slightly chimeric features on her face and a white tip on her tail (not pictured.) She's lying on a fuzzy blanket on the back of my couch, her eyes dilated because I was bribing her with a toy to look at me for the picture without prying the red holiday ribbon from around her neck.

It didn't last more then two seconds after this was taken, but hey, I got the picture. This girl is known as Precious Perfect Princess Persie, and she earns her name. She's the clever little mischief maker of the trio, but she's easily thwarted by food, because it's her dearest dream to be as chonky as me. She's also the sweetest, gentlest, most patient of them, except when you (eventually) cross her line. Then she will cut a bitch, and I love that for her.

Tonight, to celebrate nothing at all, my wife and I made peanut butter chocolate cookies. The recipe called for less flour and an extra egg yolk, to make the texture gooey, and it really worked. My portions continue to be suspect; I overcorrected and made 19 instead of 15. I'm still having fun.

Twelve chocolate peanut butter cookies on a baking sheet, on top of some parchment paper. Not perfect, but I'm still learning.

For those of you who don't know what goatheads are, they're little thorns created by Satan to puncture feet. They propagate via pain and violence. Just like JKR.

A trio of goatheads, hard little thorn seeds that have spikes on every surface that are as long as the seeds themselves. They hurt like a motherfucker to step on with bare feet, and can puncture THROUGH a thin flip flop.

I baked a pumpkin cake from scratch today. My first ever. As you can see, I got distracted when dashing it with cinnamon, and the edible gold dust came out like a goddamn fire hose. Everyone will be shitting glitter until New Year. But anything worth doing is worth doing badly.

A pumpkin cake that, while it will probably taste very good, is topped with very slapdash rows of cinnamon and a metric butt-ton of edible gold dust. It’s made in a 9x13 cake pan, now on a serving plate with cream cheese frosting.

This is HUGE for a girl who's mostly unable to try anything new because of executive dysfunction and burnt-out-gifted-child-bullshit. But I decided to practice what I've been preaching on here: to create something, even if it's bad. Here's how they turned out:

Two trays of chocolate chip cookies, made with semisweet and swirled with dark chocolate patches. They're astonishingly not burnt, well-shaped, and I didn't put too many on the tray so they didn't bulge together. And just for you: they smell (and taste) pretty damn good.

My friend Kat decided they needed something to do with their hands. So they took up whittling. They made this as their first project. Isn't it gorgeous? We need to make things with our hands. We need to be creative, to toss aside AI and just fill the world with who WE are. Be like Kat.

I embroidered this by hand! Someday I'll do it again, and incorporate all the techniques I've learned since the original. (I'd show the project I'm working on right now, but it sort of looks like a vulva atm.)

Oh hey! My little town had its Pride Parade today. My wife helped out and had a great time. I couldn't go (my body hates me today) but they had a great turnout for the parade and festival! And then we have a drag show tonight! So of course, when my wife got home, she adorned Luna in Pride gear.

My latest embroidery project turned out pretty solid, all things considered. And then I was able to learn how to back the hoop and sew felt on to protect it. Maybe I'll learn this craft yet, who knows. (This is how I'm coping with *gestures wildly at everything*)

I just finished @tkingfisher.com 's WHAT MOVES THE DEAD. Friends, holy shit. This retelling of Poe slaps you upside the head, grips your heart and doesn't let go until you hit the last page. The icy grip around your heart releases and you realize you were holding your breath the whole time. 5 STARS.

Next up is our middle cat, Persephone (Persie for short.) Also known as Sister Persisa when she does her Work of the Hungry before every meal, she's a spunky, clever sweetheart and a goddamned delight. (Also my witch's familiar, so I might be a bit biased.)

I managed to get one picture of Apollo in his hoodie before he hot-reversed out of it. Friends, this is the only man allowed to get fresh with me. He's perfect and precious in every way. Too bad he's definitely my wife's familiar.
