Tylenol causes autism? FCC threatens media firms & violates the 1st Amendment? Drug smugglers merit being fired on as an act of war? Deploy the military to quell nonexistent domestic crime?

So the man who can’t pay his own contractors is in control of the US Treasury’s payment system? Grift upon grift upon grift.
Headline from the San Antonio Express-News noting that 29 contractors for SpaceX claim they have not been paid $5.5 million for at least two months. Article by Brandon Lingle, dated February 3,2025.

How can it possibly be time to go back to work? It’s a winter wonderland out there in my backyard! ❄️☃️
Photo displays a steeply sloped backyard covered with snow, trees flocked with snow in the background, and a green house with a snow covered roof on the left. Photo displays a panoramic scene of historic red brick buildings in Old Colorado City in Colorado Springs, topped with snow and set against bare trees and snow-covered foothills rising up behind them. Behind the foothills is a higher ridge of snow-streaked mountains shrouded in blue-gray clouds.

I'm almost embarrassed to say, because I'm sure that if I look more closely, there will be some ethical/environmental concern I'm unhappy about. But I've been making Cafe Bustelo in my moka pot ever since I discovered the brand while working for the Puerto Rican govt 2 decades ago. It's delicious!
A silver stovetop coffeemaker ("moka pot") sits on a gas burner next to a bright yellow can and bright yellow vacuum package of Cafe Bustelo coffee.

A student told me this is circulating in their yikyak feed & the kids are not all right. I’ve lived through decades of political whiplash, but my students have no experience & feel the world as they know it is ending. Recent reports about mass food shortages within 25 yrs say they’re not wrong.
An image containing three news headlines about Trump’s recent staff appointments. The first headline reads “Trump’s new border czar championed family-separation policy in first term”. The second headline reads Trump chooses Lee Zeldin to run EPA as he plans to guy clkmate rules”. The third headline reads “Trump gears up for assault on wokeness with education overhaul” and below the headline is body text that reads “The president-elect has laid out big changes for America’s classrooms, including expanding school choice - and shutting down the Department of Education” with the “shutting down Department of Education” highlighted in yellow. At the top of the three headlines is a caption that reads “November 11, 2024. When someone tells you who they are, believe them. He’s appointing exactly who Project 2025 authors wanted to implement their agenda.”

Sharing this with all my students. Will they believe me? No. Will they rethink when & how they use LLMs? Also no. But I can hope to get through to a few. @brohrer.bsky.social & @geocucu.bsky.social

@Brandon Roher posted: it’s funny how listening to a wittily crafter lecture *feels* like the fastest way to learn when the *actual* fastest way to learn is spending time lost and confused to the point of despair.
@George replied Aka “LLMs/flavor of the decade tech won’t solve educations because the struggle *IS* the process”

Can anyone who is following politics tell if this has any basis in reality or if it’s just fearmongering?
A Twitter post reads; “Harris will win the election but looks like the Heritage Projects plan is to convince states that split their votes, Maine & Nebraska and swing states that have Republican SOS to refuse to certify their elections so that Harris won’t have the 270 votes necessary. Then the election would leave the electoral college process and move to the House. Each State Delegation gets one vote, the winner is whoever gets the simply majority, 26 votes. Their state determines who their delegation must vote for. Some of the swing states have Republican houses that can force a vote for Trump even though their electoral college votes went to Harris. This is a dangerous game they’re playing.

Overturning tens of millions of votes would be a big, big mistake. If this happens and it goes to SCOTUS who then tries to install Trump, Biden can declare martial law and override Congress and the Supreme Court. When martial law is in place, as Commander in Chief, Biden has unlimited autho

I challenge anyone who opposes Harris's candidacy to engage in a substantive debate on the merits of her policies and track record, rather than calling her disgusting names not even fit for "locker room talk." (6/)

Gendered disinformation and abuse—which happen on both sides of the political spectrum—undermine women's participation in public life. They dissuade generations of young women from seeking public office. We need to do better. (6/)

It's also worth noting that our adversaries amplify misogyny and racism and use it to their own advantage. Take a look at how Russia's Zvezda described Harris in 2020: (7/) Image alt text not available

A copy of three Twitter posts by Nina Jankowicz:

2. Transphobic narratives are also often employed against women in public life; in 2020, users claimed Harris couldn’t have risen to a position of power without having secretly been a man. They falsely alleged she had been a man named “Kamal Aroush” before transitioning. (3/)

3. Racist/racialized narratives: just as with Obama, users falsely claimed Harris was not eligible for the presidency because both of her parents were immigrants. They also frequently claimed she wasn’t “black enough” or “Indian enough” to claim those identities. (4/)

It's important to label these narratives and lies as what they are: an attempt to undermine a powerful woman's public service because of her gender, her background, her skin color. (5/)

1. Sexualized narratives, claiming Harris “slept her way to the top,” or that she is sexually promiscuous. In 2020 we found that users engaging with this narrative were more likely to engage with other abuse and disinfo. They attempted to undermine her fitness for office (2/)

Since @wiczipedia.bsky.social isn’t actively posting here, I’m sharing her important thread about what her research found and what we can expect to see in the coming disinformation hellscape.
A copy of a Twitter post by Nina Jankowicz: In 2020 I led a study on gendered abuse and disinfo against women political candidates. We found 336k pieces of abuse & disinfo targeting 13 candidates; 78% of that targeted Kamala Harris. After Biden’s endorsement, here are some narratives and tropes we should look out for: (1/)
