For all the writers who've felt this way over the past months:
A screenshot from Tumblr user novelconcepts which reads: "Hey, man, c'mere. Listen. Get in real close, this is important. You're gonna make stuff again. You're gonna make stuff you're proud of. You're gonna make stuff you're excited to share. You're going to feel that overwhelming drive to create, not just the frantic 'I want to want to' you're stuck in now. You're going to have awesome ideas, and you're going to make them into a reality. You're going to create again. You're still an artist. You're still a writer. You're still home to the same passion you had before. You'll find it again. It's not gone. It's just resting. Let it rest. You're going to make stuff again. I promise."

The office is coming along! Bottom shelf is all clients and critique partners (and my lil novella). Looking forward to adding more to it this year ✨
Two long shelves on a dark wall with books, plants, and trinkets. The titles are all science fiction and fantasy. There framed pictures of fantasy scenery hung around the bookshelves, but a lot of blank space remains.

Update: the dark blank corner of the office that I never show anyone is coming along nicely. I'm thinking about buying strip shelving to put above the Kallax for showing off my favorite LPs. Thoughts?
The corner of Cee's office is relatively small and set between a window and a door to the hall. There are hardwood floors, and the window has a thick, white curtain embroidered with a tiger. It's daytime and light is coming through the window. The wall color is a very dark blue-black, and there's a new IKEA Kallax cube furniture unit against the wall with the door. It's mostly empty, but has a record player on top and Cee's small vinyl collection stored in it. In front of it is a leather reading chair with a foot stool.

Look at this cat and tell me he didn't think he was the center of the universe. He passed in my arms outside at the vet, and as soon as I felt him go, all the birds in the yard started chirping. I just know he bolted out like a rocket, all "you can't escape me now, birbs!"

If your protagonist isn't the one driving a major plot point, you can prevent them from getting sidelined by ensuring that their actions/decisions prior to that plot point have a major impact on how that event shakes down. #writingcommunity #writesky #amwriting

There's no such thing as a word you should never use! Words are tools in a writer's toolbox, and some tools are multi-purpose while others are only useful sparingly. Part of growing as a writer is learning which tool is most effective and where. #writingcommunity #writesky #writingtips

Are you a self-publishing author about to embark upon the delightful and frustrating journey of learning how to make your own covers out of curiosity or financial necessity? Here are my three tips for beginners (and a few pics of covers I've designed for myself as 'evidence'): (1/11)
A book titled "Salt, Steel, Silk" next to a kindle and a phone, also displaying the book cover. The cover is blue with white flowers and some nautical imagery like coral and a sailboat stuck into the bouquet. There's a long dagger running down the center. The title is overlayed on top.A picture of a hardcover book on a wooden desk with leaves artfully arranged in the background. The book has silver and copper designs on the front in concentric circles like steampunk gears. There's a dagger running down the center of the cover. On top, the title reads: Silverweaver.

The Palahniuk article that never gets old. #amwriting #writingcommunity
In six seconds, you’ll hate me.

But in six months, you’ll be a better writer.

From this point forward – at least for the next half year – you may not use “thought” verbs. These include: Thinks, Knows, Understands, Realizes, Believes, Wants, Remembers, Imagines, Desires, and a hundred others you love to use.

The list should also include: Loves and Hates.

And it should include: Is and Has, but we’ll get to those, later.

Another #wipsnips from the nautical fantasy novel. I've backburnered it coming into the holiday season a lil bit, but I'm hoping to get back on the horse (boat?) in a week or two. Are you able to work through holidays, or do they merc your daily wordcount? #amwriting #queerwriters #writesky
Sailing was the closest Leo had ever come to freedom. And if two months in the shipyard withered him down to his roots, he couldn’t imagine how Heris felt.

“We’ll get you sailing again,” he promised.

More quiet greeted him. It took active effort not to fill it, for though his words always bubbled beneath the surface, Heris’ took longer to compose. Not everyone had the ability to open their mouths and have sentences pour out.

Perhaps they were smarter for it, too.

The weirdest part about today's #wipsnips is that it has detailed setting description. Usually, setting lands solidly in the second-draft-problems category for me, though I guess there are exceptions! Do you have any story elements you underwrite during draft one? #amwriting #queerwriters #writesky
Leo found Heris perched on the edge of the main courtyard’s fountain, feet dangling in the water and trouser cuffs getting a much-needed soak. Water lilies bobbed around his swishing feet. In deference to Wralin’s mid-afternoon heat, he’d found the one corner of the fountain where willow branches cast dappled shadows. They formed patterns on his drooping shoulders and backlit the halo of flyaways escaping his queue.

“You look exhausted,” Leo said, joining him at the waterside.

Heris must have heard his approach, for he didn’t startle. “Lost in thought, I fear.”

“And what’s more exhausting than getting trapped in one’s thoughts?”

Today's #wipsnips reminded me that, on days when writing is difficult, I make no attempt to correctly punctuate anything in my rough draft. Punctuation is ✨vibes✨ until I'm forced to put my revision hat on, alright? There's a reason I'm not a copyeditor. #amwriting #queerwriters #writesky
“Do you remember that time during Second Moon—what was it, two years back?—when we were south of the Xahaetian archipelago?” Leo asked.

“When Jasker misjudged the tide after visiting his lover and spent the better part of two hours rowing in place? Terrible business.”

“Was it? As I recall, you were on watch and spotted him a boat length off our stern, then let him row like a dog until slack water.”

As a writer, it can be scary to have your manuscript out with a developmental editor. I hear that. But in the same way that public speaking gets easier when you picture your audience in their undies, I hope it helps to learn that this is what I, an editor, look like while working: #writingcommunity

Leovander Kastri, captain of the Skylark and bastard prince of Fanoch, didn’t believe in no-win situations. If he did, he’d have sent the white flag of surrender up his mast an hour ago.

“Too late for that,” he muttered and tightened his grip on the helm. Surrender wasn’t an option—not when they first spotted Gambric warships on the horizon, and certainly not now—but that didn’t stop him from adding, “Fuck, this is bad,” for good measure.

Yet another #wipsnips from my 🌈 nautical fantasy, ever-so-slowly posting to Patreon. #amwriting #queerwriters #writesky
Instead of falling into another rant, Leo changed tacks, uttering a phrase Heris would have heard far too many times in the years they’d spent shipboard together.

        “I’ll think of something.”

“Is that a promise, or a threat?”

This time, his laugh spilled out unencumbered by guilt. Heris had the fleet’s most implacable blank face, but the tease was unmistakable. And maybe, in spite of everything, they had reason for good humor.
