The cheese wedge of air purification
Two 20x30 furnace filters and a single triangle of cardboard with 20" base and 30" edges. Duct taped together and with a box fan pointing into the apparatus it can make a surprisingly functional (albeit inefficient) air purifier for very cheap. At home depot if you get 3 of the 20x20 you get a fourth free, and can make a 20x20 square with the box fan on top pointing directly down into the filter cube to get more surface area, though the 20xwhatever size all cost the same so this still gets you 3/4 the surface area for 2/3 the price, or double the fans and get more volume. You can also do a big 20x20x4/5/6" deep single one if money is tight ON THE FRONT OF THE FAN, though expect less air flow.

McMorrow absolutely fumbled her campaign by being more moderate in a time of action, but I genuinely have always thought she's been a great person. I really hope she stays active and I'll happily vote for her in the future. Still vote for Abdul though

So much of my energy in urbanism came from the indisputable facts that it's right, but now I feel like I'm slipping backwards by being driven more emotionally. Like "we will build beautiful monuments and create a joyous atmosphere". That's not objective! What do I do with that other than iconaltry?

Cedar @cedar500.bsky.social · 07/04/2025
I forgot to post this GIF I made, but part of me feels like I'm slipping in effectiveness. Like I used to be so much more driven to esoterically talk about "urbanism is good because math" but now I want to say "you are psychotic if you don't tear up the asphalt and free the dirt"\

Sorry for how negative this post is, but Michigan Democrats actively work to make my state worse, every single fucking day. Walking miles home in the cold and the rain because the bus doesn't run past a certain time, on a road with no sidewalks because everything but cars is an afterthought; hatred.

Cedar @cedar500.bsky.social · 20/03/2025
Trying to figure out how to best articulate my feeling on Michigan transit, in a way that both gets my emotions out and actually helps progress. All I feel is hate. A "If you are a dem who isn't actively working for transit, I want you to be as miserable as you make me every day" kind of hate.

I've always wanted to make a graph that visualizes taxable value across the city, but only recently thought to do so with a "slice". TV/A is a city's version of a job's dollars per hour. Parks and days off don't pay, and that's fine! But we need to balance it with income.
A graphic showing taxable value per acre across a slice of Lansing MI. It has the text:
LANSING TAXABLE VALUE per ACRE
Properties on a North-South line, East of Washington Avenue
Properties pay the city taxes, and in return receive infrastructure and services.
How much a property pays the city depends on the property's Taxable Value.
How much a property costs the city in services and infrastructure scales closely with Area.
Taxable Value Per Acre is a strong approximation of what a property pays vs what it receives.

Lower values mean a property pays less than the cost of the services and infrastructure it receives.
Higher values mean a property pays more than the cost of the services and infrastructure it receives.

Currently, Lansing's zoning mandates most of the zoned residential area to only allow low
Taxable Value properties with lots of Area. Properties having a low TV/A is fine, in moderation.
As the average TV/A goes down, taxes go up to compensate. We need to balance low and high.

Primary Every Democrat
It’s exhausting to watch poll-tested, donor-beholden congressional Democrats continue to be too old, too cloistered, and too bumbling to do anything as the government burns.

Obviously the "plant fruit trees along the road so no one ever is hungry" people haven't thought everything through entirely, but I'd like to take that idea and spin it into a"new city beautiful" movement that's mostly there to take lanes off roads

In regards to Lansing I now I ramble to people all the time about things like financial solvency, but seriously it's insane seeing a cash strapped city with the highest taxes in the region balance it's entire economy on an industry that HATES us, which is about to tank-

I have taken like 30 pictures of this church over the past 2 years to post to Twitter for a fun fact and AWLAYS forget to post them. Fun fact, the weirdly different lighter brick part of the church nearest to us is older than the church; it was a house eaten up by it.

In this you can see Sheridan Road to Cesar Chavez. There's a giant spike right at Cesar Chavez showing just how valuable dense, old style builds are for Lansing by a huge margin.

A screenshot of a project I just started. It's still in the ugly "collect data and convert it to pixels" phase but hopefully this should be one of my most useful graphics to date for talking about Lansing: a city wide cross section of taxable values per acre

The only part I'm not super certain on is the Bay City route. I chose this alignment which requires a new connection, a river crossing, and another company, but the approach into BC is much better than the Lake State side of the river.

Going to start a series where I go over my picks for potential rail lines in detail. First up is Detroit to Bay City, with Flint and Saginaw as the major new stops.
Map of a potential passenger line from Detroit to Bay City. Existing stations are in Green, Yellow are existing stations that need work, Red (Bay City) has no station, and smaller blue dots are potential additional stops.

Just about every one of my coworkers shared their weather woes but like other than the scarf and base layer for my legs it was a completely normal day for me. Transit when good can make the most variable and dangerous parts of your life more mundane. Hourly bus service btw.

Not to be too cheesy about it but 6 degree weather with heavy snow is wonderful when you're taking a bus. Waiting at the bus stop stinks sure but no scraping windshields, shoveling, waiting for the car to heat up- seriously nice

Cool thing about snow is you can see how much money is wasted by excess road space in person. The world becomes an educational graphic.

It's about 5.6 miles (with Tranter and TCOOA). A single bus looping here could do the trip within 20 minutes, keeping in step with the 5 for transfers (though dropping Tranter might be ideal) A second bus could be used for opposite travel but it's so short one might be good
